Pin-up of the day- The Walking Saboteur!

The Walking Saboteur by Taylor Lymbery
As the days get closer to the Dallas Comic Con on May 17-19th, I'm getting early commissions for that show. Here is the first one, "The Walking Saboteur". It's an illustration on a 10"X16" white rag board. The request was from Joel at the Darth Mall vintage toy store. He wanted a mash up of two of his favorite characters, Firefly from G.I.Joe and Daryl from the Walking Dead. He requested Firefly shooting Daryl's crossbow at a zombie. My challenge was to figure out how to incorporate all of the elements he requested into one pice and have it work. I took Daryl's body shape and added the Firefly costume to him. I them gave him the season 1 cut sleeve shirt and added a little blue to the grey to make it stand out. I added the crossbow, but put it in green to harken back to the vintage action figure of Firefly since he had all green weapons. I used the zombie's head explosion to frame our main character. Using thick water color pigment and a brush, I added in the background to give the same explosive look as Firefly's vintage package. Now the scan is a little dark for the background. I'm not sure why. So some of the yellow work seems a bit dark. I had quite a bit of fun putting this piece together. I hope you enjoy it. I've got to get back to some more commissions so take care till next time, and stay tuned for more postings. You can also see this piece here to go to my deviantart account.

I purchased a table for the Dallas Comic Con in May. I look forward to seeing all of the familiar faces and hopefully some new people stopping by to chat with us.

I have posted some new shirt designs in my Cafepress store. Head over to my Cafepress store and get a shirt or a couple!

I have all Xenex the Bug Man comic books available for print on demand. You can see that listing here on my store's tab for comic books.

Just to let you know all know, I am taking commissions. If you would like to commission me for original artwork, head over to the commissions tab in store to see how.

If you have not heard about the Podcast called, "Talking Toys with Taylor and Jeff", then it's time I let you know! Jeff and I are on the show where we talk about toys! (Go figure, I mean Go action figure!) Seems simple enough. We pick out a toy line to discuss in each show. We share our childhood memories, our favorite five, and talk about the one toy in the line that got away. Jeff talks about how he cherished his toys and I talk about how they ended up in the garden! The other two shows are The pilot episode, where Jeff and Josh Taylor break down the Pilot Episode in TV series, and The Loosely Based Podcast where Brynna and Jeff compare the book to the movie adaptation! The shows are great! If you are interested in what we got, go to Marvindogmedia.com  and give us a listen. You can subscribe to the shows on itunes and get up to date info on upcoming shows on facebook:
If you like what we have, be sure to tell your friends! We need your word of mouth to help us keep making shows! And, be sure to give Jeff a hug. He's feeling a bit grumpy.

Painting of the Day- Thunder in the Mystic Mountains!

Thunder in the Mystic Mountains by Taylor Lymbery
As I finished up my last painting I took a little time out to get another painting done. I've found that I really enjoy illustrative painting. Painting feels a little more natural than some of the other art mediums that I do. For this piece, I decided to go with Thunder Punch He-Man as the big hero of this scene. The reason why I did this is that I recently picked up a Vintage Thunder Punch He-Man from a local vintage toy store called DFW Vintage Toys. Thunder Punch He-Man pops ring caps when you twist his body and let him swing out a mighty punch. I always wanted one of these He-men when I was a kid. I never got one, but the fascination was always there. Since I got Thunder Punch He-Man, I have had a hard time putting this toy down. I bought a big pack of ring caps to pop in his back pack while I am at stop lights on my way to work. It keeps me entertained while I am on the road. I'm amazed that this toy is still working for being 28 years old now and it's in great shape. I also decided to add one of my favorite toy vehicles, the Roton. I did a review on one not to long ago. If you read that posting, then you know my love for this Masters of the Universe toy. This will probably be the last painting to post for a while. My commissions have stacked up and I need to get them finished. This piece is painted in acrylics on a 13" X 24" 60lb polar matte paper. You can also see this piece in my deviantart gallery here. I hope you enjoy the piece. Now I've got some comics and commissions to finish.

Katie Sue Studios Sequential Illustration Class 2013

Not too long ago, I got a chance to sit in and teach a class on sequential art at Katie Sue Studios. I had a blast. The kids and I set up a story about a girl that gets butted by a horse and ends up in space. It sounds weird, but it works out in the end. In one story arch, Pac-Man swoops in to make an appearance and there were a couple of times when I felt that we had to push away from the idea of our main character having her brains eaten by monstrous aliens! Trust me when I say, the imagination level of this class was very high! I looked over each students sequential art and chatted with them about how they set up their stories. I was very impressed with everyone's work. If you would like to know more about Katie Sue Studios then check out their facebook page here. So, I would like to send the students, Hayden, Gabrielle, Audrey, and Lucija, and the studio a big thanks for having me there for a class! I hope you all enjoyed it as much as me.

Pin-Up of the Day- Bethany the Vulture Girl

Bethany Vulture Girl by Taylor Lymbery
I decided to add another Bird inspired pin-up girl to the roster of my alternative pin-up girls! Ever since I did the "Rachel the Owl Girl" piece, I have felt inspired to get another bird based girl done while on break from illustrating comic book pages. I do have plans to get a hawk based or eagle based bird girl done one day, but for now, I have Bethany.
I am pretty happy with this one. I love that there is a lot of color. Originally, I saw this being a rather color muted piece. I imagined that there would be a  lot of browns, tans, and gray. I wasn't sure I could let that happen, so I used the outfit to splash in color and did this nice backdrop that reminds me of the type of backdrop you get in a photography studio; also known as a paper role.
In some ways, the body seems a little off. I really like this. I feel that it helps define my overall style. I tend to make the neck long. This is a feature I like to accentuate. I think it comes from my wife having a long neck. I find that body feature very beautiful!
I managed to do all the pencils and ink in one sitting. I colored it the following day in photoshop. I have added this to my run of alternative pin-up girl posters that I'll have available at conventions. You can also see this art piece here.

There's been an update to the store tabs on both Xenex the Bug Man, and this site. All of the print on demand issues, cafepress stores and commissions info will be under the new store tab on both this site and the Xenex the Bug Man site. Hopefully this page makes shopping a bit easier. Go and check it out!

Just a quick update: I did go ahead and purchase a table for the Fan Days Convention in October. So I will be there (given that I don't have another mishap).

Now, you mighty be asking what this Marvin Dog media is. I've got answers. I had been working with a good friend of mine, Jeff McGee, before I got sick on designing logos and banners for a podcast that I am on and logos and banners of podcasts that other friends are on. I have listened to all of the shows so far and they are great! Jeff and I are on the show where we talk about toys! (Go figure, I mean Go action figure!) That show is called Talking toys with Taylor and Jeff. Sketch Card of the Day- Blast Attak!

Blast Attak sketch card by Taylor Lymbery

And just when you thought the He-Man sketch cards were done, I bring them back! Trust me, I have a whole binder full of these guys. Even if I stopped making anymore of these sketch cards, I still have a load of them to post. SO... With that being said, our sketch card of the day is Blast Attak! Now this is one of those characters that came around at the end of the vintage Masters of the Universe line. He's very weird, though I would love to own one. I did some research on this guy and was left empty handed as far as background story. I've seen fan art of him where he is in the 200X style design with a snake man emblem on him. I'm not sure, but I think he might be a snake man exploding robot. If you are reading this, and you know, let me know in the comments, cause I am stumped. Now, I mentioned that this guy exploded. He did. His action figure came in two halves. You put Blast Attak together and then then inserted a cord in his back. If you hit the plunger on the cord, he'd explode! I remember wanting this guy for that very reason! Think about it.  Let's say that the good guys are trying to close up Grayskull. Blast Attak is able to get half his body in the draw bridge door, and then, "Boom!". He would basically blow the door off of his hinges! At the least, that's how I envisioned him as a kid. Beside the exploding feature, he is basically a very cool robot looking dude, and let's be honest, having another robot in the MOTU universe is just plain awesome! You can also see this art piece here.

Pin-up of the day- Rachel the Owl Girl!

Rachel the owl girl by Taylor Lymbery

It's been a while since I did one of these pin-up girls. I was inspired when I was thinking up a gift for my grandmother. I had thought of making a Rosie the Riveter pin-up girl with a bird who's color is corresponding to her uniform. As I had mentioned in the Blue Jay posting, she was happy to get just the bird. I was so intrigued by the bird/ pin-up girl idea, I just couldn't let this go! Hanging out with friends one evening, I managed to do all the pencils and ink in one sitting. I colored it the following day in photoshop. I have added this to my run of alternative pin-up girl posters that I'll have available at conventions. You can also see this art piece here.

Trying my hand at a second painting. Hope it goes well.

First painting posted at deviantart.com
Second painting
Recently I posted a painting that I had been working on, off and on for while, the other day on deviantart. The response was a load better than what I had been expecting. Keeping that in mind, I have decided to try my hand at another one. Now, for you all that know that I have a lot on my plate, this is something that I work on in my bits of spare time. I am still working on the comic. Xenex is almost done with its writing. And then, I knock out those pages. And yes, I am still working on the promised pin-ups. I will have to admit though, I am really enjoying the painting process and now have even more respect for Earl Norem and the painting illustrators of the past. I might actually consider painting the cover of the first Xenex book (issue 1-? bound together in graphic novel form). We'll see. But for now, you can enjoy what I have so far of the second painting.
