Sketch Card of the Day- Skeletor!

Skeletor or Ole' bone head! There are not too many people in the world who do not know the name, "Skeletor". When the 200X series of action figures hit the market, I was extremely excited about the new design that Skeletor rocked. He looked so cruel and evil. I liked him a lot when I was a kid, but due to his new design, he won my heart in 2002. If you know the 200X design well, you should understand what I am saying. So this piece is an older sketch card that I did way back a year or so based on the 2002 toy of Skeletor. You can also see this piece in my deviantart gallery here.

Big news! I've been invited to be one of the many talented artist to have work featured in a one night vinyl toy show called, "Vinyl Thoughts 4: Free for All" in Dallas on September 12th 2013. If you plan to be in the area, stop by and check out all of the cool custom vinyl toys.

I'm scheduled to be on the DELol show on Sunday July 21st to have a good old fashioned "Throw down in the toy isle" toy quiz compatition between Jeff and I. You need to tune in to the DELol show that Sunday. It will be fun!

I did buy a table for the Dallas Comic Con: Fan Days on October 4th-6th. If you are wanting a pre-Fan Days commission, let me know and I'll get it ready for pick up at that show.

I have posted some new shirt designs in my Cafepress store. Head over to my Cafepress store and get a shirt or a couple!

Just to let you know all know, I am taking commissions. If you would like to commission me for original artwork, head over to the commissions tab in store to see how.

If you have not heard about the Podcast called, "Talking Toys with Taylor and Jeff", then it's time I let you know! Jeff and I are on the show where we talk about toys! (Go figure, I mean Go action figure!) Seems simple enough. We pick out a toy line to discuss in each show. We share our childhood memories, our favorite five, and talk about the one toy in the line that got away. Jeff talks about how he cherished his toys and I talk about how they ended up in the garden! The other two shows are The pilot episode, where Jeff and Josh Taylor break down the Pilot Episode in TV series, and The Loosely Based Podcast where Brynna and Jeff compare the book to the movie adaptation! The shows are great! Sketch Card of the Day- Captain Cold!

For a while, I'll be posting some older art from my archives. I really should get that work on the site and it will help for postings as I finish up a big comic project for Gradient Comics.

Today's Sketch card is Captain Cold. Captain Cold made his first appearance in May of 1957. He is a DC villain and namely one of the Flash's. I had never heard of Captain Cold until Mattel made an action figure of him in the DC Classics collection. He was part of a big build-a-figure toy wave and when I saw him, I couldn't resist getting him in my collection. This sketch card is based on that action figure.

You can also see this sketch card in my deviantart gallery here.

Pin-up of the Day- King Randor!

Oh King Randor, are you the true ruler of the burger? Are you the Burger King? There is no relation between the two, but come on, someone was inspired a little from the other! King Randor is the father of Adam in the Masters of the Universe story. As a kid, I always wanted a King Randor action figure. Now that I am older, I still want one and the Classics version of him too. He has a really cool color scheme and great design elements. He looks a lot like the Burger King which is always a plus in my mind. He can rule my hunger and feed me delicious whoppers any day! You can also see this here on my deviantart gallery.

I had a blast on the DELol show. I was there talking about Xenex the Bug Man, my custom toys, and Jeff and I's podcast, Talking Toys with Taylor and Jeff. Here's a link to the show I'm on (episode 42). If you haven't listened to the DELol show, you are truly missing out.

Sketch Card of the Day- Mosquitor!

I spoke a bit about him when I did the Masters of the Universe Classics Mosquitor review for my action figure Friday back in the day. This sketch card boasts the greatness of the 200X Mosquitor design. In my opinion, that is the best design of this particular Evil Horde character. One of the things that I really wanted to have for the Masters of the Universe Classics Mosquitor action figure was the blood vat backpack that the 200X design carries. At this point, I can't expect one to put on my action figure... that is unless I make it. I guess I could still hope for a weapons pack for the Classics toy that would have one. Here's to hoping. You can also see this sketch card in my deviantart gallery.

Sketch Book Monday- The Dude from that Kent Comic I worked on.

As I am getting things ready for the upcoming Sci-Fi Expo, I haven't left a lot of time for me to make any new pin-ups that I can post before the show. So, I figured that I would post some older work out of my sketch book. This week it's a character study for the main male character from the Kent Comic Book story that I worked on called, "Vacation Syndication", written by Brady Sullivan. I like that this guy had so many fun facial expressions throughout the 12 pages of the story. He had shock, anger, disgust, terror and many more. If you have not heard of Kent, I have it listed on my store page, here. Go and check it out. You can also see this piece in my deviantart gallery.

I do have a table for the Sci-Fi Expo on February 9-10th. I'll be there with some new work to sell, my pin-up girl posters, the newest issue of Xenex the Bug Man and custom toys. Jeff will be there with me selling some Marvindog media merchandise and taking toy memory recordings! Stop by, say,"hi", and show your support. I hope to see you there!

I have posted some new shirt designs in my Cafepress store. Head over to my Cafepress store and get a shirt or a couple!

I have all Xenex the Bug Man comic books available for print on demand. You can see that listing here on my store's tab for comic books.

Just to let you know all know, I am taking commissions. If you would like to commission me for original artwork, head over to the commissions tab in store to see how.

Sketch Card of the day- Hawkman!

Hawkman Sketch Card by Taylor Lymbery
This week will be a Hawkman kind of week. To start off this week, I have an older sketch card of the winged hero. Hawkman is a DC superhero who was created by Gardener Fox (writer) and Dennis Neville (artist). Several incarnations of Hawkman have appeared in DC Comics, all of them characterized by the use of archaic weaponry and by large, artificial wings, attached to a harness made from the special Nth metal that allows flight. Most incarnations of Hawkman work closely with a partner/romantic interest named Hawkgirl or Hawkwoman. When I was a kid, my best friend Stephan gave me his Super Powers Hawkman action figure. My Hawkman didn't have wings, but that did not keep me from flying him around. But anything about this character outside of me having an action figure of Hawkman was completely unknown to me as a kid. In all honestly, I should read more comics with Hawkman in them. There is one story I am looking forward to getting my hands on where Hawkman and Adam Strange, one of my favorite characters, team up to end a war between the Rann's and Thanagar's inhabitants. I've heard that it is just ok, but it has such a heavy hand of science fiction that I can't pass it up. I hope it doesn't disappoint. You can also see this sketch card here in my devianart gallery.

Hand Eye Study 1 by Taylor Lymbery
It's a sketchbook kind of day! Today I have hands, a couple of eyes and a mouth! Ooh! It's a bit creepy once you see the face in the middle. Hands are tough. I'm constantly using my own hands as models. Is that a problem? Not usually... not until I need to draw my right hand, and that's the hand that I use to draw with. There are hand models you can buy. I probably should get one, but what I am doing seems to be working fine for now. The trick to drawing hands is this: think of your hand as a flat rectangular box. Use an acute triangle for the base of your thumb. Then draw lines out for you fingers. Draw in spheres in the place of all of your joints in your hand. Then connect the spheres with little rectangular boxes that are the extensions of your fingers. With this basic model, you should be able to "pose" the hand and still be able to get the anatomy of it pretty close. It will take practice. The good thing about this method is that it gives you an easier idea of where shadows fall depending on the light source. Now, you don't have to use this method. This is how I learned to draw hands. If you have a better method and want to share it with me, please feel free to comment! You can also see this piece here in my deviantart gallery.

Sketch Card of the Day- The Horde Trooper!

Horde Trooper Sketch Card by Taylor Lymbery
Our sketch card of the day is the Horde Trooper!  When I was a kid, I searched everywhere for this action figure! I really wanted one! Not only was this guy bigger than all of the other Masters of the Universe figures, but he also had a cool action feature of falling apart when you hit a big red button on his chest! Yeah! Think about it, if my Fisto action figure hit the Horde Trooper square in the chest, this guy would fall apart! This seems silly, but even now I am quite excited about the idea. Action features on toys, back when was a kid, was a deal breaker for me. Other than the really cool toy, the horde trooper was nothing more than a mindless robot that built up Hordak's army. The cartoon portrayed them as a basic army builder. There is not a lot to say about them having a back story or even a story to be excited about. The Horde Trooper action figure went to store shelves back in 1986. I never found one to add to my collection. These days I will check out the prices on ebay, and they are rather expensive for not being complete and really expensive if it has it's staff. I really don't see me getting one, because I just don't have the extra money for this. So far, there is no word of if Mattel will do a Masters of the Universe Classics version of this guy. If they do, I might look into getting one, but that depends on it's action feature...You can also see this art piece here.

Just a quick update: I did go ahead and purchase a table for the Fan Days Convention in October. So I will be there (given that I don't have another mishap).
There's been an update to the store tabs on both Xenex the Bug Man, and this site. All of the print on demand issues, cafepress stores and commissions info will be under the new store tab on both this site and the Xenex the Bug Man site. Hopefully this page makes shopping a bit easier. Go and check it out!

I just updated the Xenex the Bug Man website with rather grand news that the long awaited issue 4 is now up for order. It's a great looking comic book! Head on over to the Bug Man site and see what I'm talking about!

Now, you mighty be asking what this Marvin Dog media is. I've got answers. Sketch Card of the Day- Scorpia!

Scorpia Sketch Card by Taylor Lymbery

Our sketch card of the day is Scorpia! Let me start off by saying that I don't like scorpions. I'm a bit of an arachnephobe. So characters like Scorpia and Webstor should make me weary of them, but that's not the case.  I'm not sure why that is. Scorpia is a part of the She-Ra universe. There's not a lot of information on her that I could find so I'll go off of what I remember. Scorpia was featured on the She-Ra Princess of Power cartoon. She is a part of the Evil Horde. Like the name indicates, she is part scorpion. Now this sketch card is based a little off of some fan art of her look if she was included in the 200X series. Personally, after seeing the one episode of the 200X cartoon that has Hordak and his basic MOTU crew beautifully envisioned, I would have loved to see her design tackled by the same cartoon designers. No official toy has been made of her.  At first I was not going to do this sketch card due to the fact that she did not have a toy made of her, but this card was a commission. The purchase was made by a good acquaintance of mine by the name of Keith E. Kimball. So, as I did some research on her to learn some background, I stumbled across this. There are a few toys made of her by Lulu Berlu. Lulu Berlu also made the custom bootleg run of Shadow Weavers on the Masters of the Universe cards. So, in the long run, I didn't break my silent rule of sketch cards for toys. I want to thank Keith for the commission, cause I would probably have never stumbled onto this cool nugget of information! I'm not sure if Mattel plans of making her in the Classics line or not. I kind of hope that they do, but I'm not holding my breath. But... if they do, I'll probably try to get one. You can also see this art piece here.

Sketch Card of the Day- Gwildor!

Gwildor Sketch Card by Taylor Lymbery
Our sketch card of the day is Gwildor! Gwildor is a character that was made specifically for the 1987 Cannon film, "Masters of the Universe". He is responsible for creating the Cosmic Key, a devise that brought He-Man and crew to Earth for a short while. He was portrayed by the actor Billy Barty. Even though this character is not an exact match, Gwildor is the Orko of the live action He-man world. I know he's not Orko, but he's a fun character to have in the universe! I love the movie and I'm a bit of an apologist for the film even though I take a lot of flack from my friends and family for liking the He-man movie. Now, this card is based more on the 1987 Mattel action figure, than the actual film appearance of Gwildor. There's not a lot of difference between the look of the two, except that the action figure is a little more colorful. The one big difference between the two is the cosmic key. The action figure's cosmic key is way, way off from how it looks in the movie. I can imagine that Mattel wanted to get the movie toys sculpted before the designs were finally approved. I believe that is not uncommon for toy companies to do. I am currently looking for a complete Gwildor action figure. There is not a lot of articulation with the toy, and his cosmic key can be considered kind of lame, but I have always wanted this him!  I guess the child in me is excited about this character because in 1987, he's responsible for bringing He-Man a little closer to home. You can also see this art piece here.

Sketch Card of the day- Faker!

Our sketch card of the day is Faker! For those that don't know, Faker is supposed to be identical to He-Man. He's an evil robot of Skeletor's that is supposed to fool the good people of Eternia, making them think that He-Man had turned to evil. In the old filmation cartoon, Faker is truly identical to He-man with the exception of his eyes. The only way one could tell the two apart was that Faker's eyes glowed. In a 200X cartoon episode, faker is a palace sparring droid that is programmed with a holographic camoflag to look like He-man to help him out when Adam is captured. In this episode you get a quick glimpse of him turning blue before he is shut down. Now, the toys are a different story! There have been 4 toy versions of Faker; one was a vintage action figure, one was a 200X exclusive action figure, and two Classics action figures. All of these toys carry the same color scheme, blue body with orange armor and purple loin cloths and boots. I'm not sure when the last time was that the good people of Eternia looked upon He-man to realize that he's not blue, but if they were, they need to get their eyes checked cause they might be blind. To make matters worse, he's wearing a mock up of Skeletor's body armor! Let's just say that If I had this action figure when I was a kid, the Heroic masters would not have been fooled! As a kid, I never thought much of Faker. I basically passed him up every time I saw him. Now that I'm older, I do have a better appreciation of him. For some reason, the blue on orange on purple color scheme really catches the eye, and maybe that's exactly what Mattel was going for. I wouldn't mind having a full run of action figures of this character. If I had to choose one of the action figures, it would be the 2011 exclusive of DC Universe Classics vs. Masters of the Universe Classics, Bizzaro vs. Faker. This version of Faker has him wearing Skeletor's Battle Armor in Orange! In my opinion, it's the best action figure version of this character. You can also see this art piece here.

Just a quick update: I did go ahead and purchase a table for the Fan Days Convention in October. So I will be there (given that I don't have another mishap).

Now, you mighty be asking what this Marvin Dog media is. I've got answers. I had been working with a good friend of mine, Jeff McGee, before I got sick on designing logos and banners for a podcast that I am on and logos and banners of podcasts that other friends are on. I have listened to all of the shows so far and they are great! Jeff and I are on the show where we talk about toys! (Go figure, I mean Go action figure!) That show is called Talking toys with Taylor and Jeff. The other two shows are The pilot episode, where Jeff and Josh Taylor break down the Pilot Episode in TV series, and The Loosely Based Podcast where Brynna and Jeff compare the book to the movie adaptation! Again, the shows are great! If you are interested in what we got, go to Marvindogmedia.com  and give us a listen. You can subscribe to the shows on itunes and get up to date info on upcoming shows on facebook:
