Taylor's Toy Tuesday's DIY Custom- Jawa

Utinni! It's the Jawa! Currently I'm reading the Star Wars Novel, and I love the description of the Jawas that is in the book. These creatures smell horrible! They are really dirty! I really wanted to get a sense of their smell with the filthying of this toy's cloak. I really wanted him to look dirty. I made this guy off of a Rose Art Easter Key Chain Colorblank 2 pack. I picked this 2 pack up way back in the day and decided that a Jawa is perfect for it's body type. In scale to the other Star Wars customs that I have, this Jawa falls right  into perfect scale with the others. Only the head turns, and at one point, I didn't think it would. When I had pulled the head off of the body to customize the head, the joint was so tight that it stretched and warped the neck post softening the plastic to the point that the head did not want to go back on. I ended up filling the body with hot glue to add strength to the neck stem. It worked! Now his arms do not move. They were molded to his sides with the original Colorblank sculpt. So the other problem I ran into with this guy was that I made a gun for it to hold, but after I added the fabric, he didn't want to hold the gun. The Gun would have pushed against his body and into his semi open hand. It failed. But I couldn't just get rid of the gun, the vintage action figure had one! I ended up taking a piece of fabric and glueing it together to create a loop. I put the gun in and painted the fabric with clear nail polish to harden the fabric. Now I can take the gun out and the fabric holds it's shape. This was a fun one to make, but I hope to not have to do another anytime soon. I ran into a lot of trouble with this guy, and I think it was due to his size. Now, I've got some important updates, so more pictures will be at the end of this posting. Enjoy the pics. I've got to get back to illustrating comic books! :)

It seems silly, but every kid that liked star trek that I knew, wanted an Enterprise to ride around on. It would've been awesome. Go see this design on welovefine.com here!

Space Anomaly design by Taylor Lymbery
There was one episode in the Voyager series where Neelix asked why Voyager had to go and inspect every anomaly it came across. Shortly after, the ship was trapped in a sub-space hole in a nebula; and then after that, about to be devoured by a living ion cloud monster; and then after that... You get the picture. Go see this design on welovefine.com here!

Tricorder Theatre
I've read that the scene in Generations where Data is using his tricorder as a puppet, is thought to be one of the worst jokes in the Star Trek universe. When I saw this scene in the theater, I laughed so hard I had soda shoot through my nostrils! Needless to say, I still find it kind of funny. Don't judge... Go see this design on welovefine.com here!

Just a quick update: I did go ahead and purchase a table for the Fan Days Convention in October. I'll be there with a ton of new work to sell, a new issue of Xenex the Bug Man and new posters. So I'll see you there!

There's been an update to the store tabs on both Xenex the Bug Man, and this site. All of the print on demand issues, cafepress stores and commissions info will be under the new store tab on both this site and the Xenex the Bug Man site. Hopefully this page makes shopping a bit easier. Go and check it out!

I just updated the Xenex the Bug Man website with rather grand news that the long awaited issue 4 is now up for order. It's a great looking comic book! Head on over to the Bug Man site and see what I'm talking about!

Now, you mighty be asking what this Marvin Dog media is. I've got answers. I had been working with a good friend of mine, Jeff McGee, before I got sick on designing logos and banners for a podcast that I am on and logos and banners of podcasts that other friends are on. I have listened to all of the shows so far and they are great! Jeff and I are on the show where we talk about toys! (Go figure, I mean Go action figure!) That show is called Talking toys with Taylor and Jeff. The other two shows are The pilot episode, where Jeff and Josh Taylor break down the Pilot Episode in TV series, and The Loosely Based Podcast where Brynna and Jeff compare the book to the movie adaptation! Again, the shows are great! If you are interested in what we got, go to Marvindogmedia.com  and give us a listen. Pin-Up of the Day- Boushh!

Boushh by Taylor Lymbery
Sitting in the theater back in 1983 is me as a kid looking at Boushh and saying, "Cool". Why? Because this character's armor is fantastic! I was completely shocked when I discovered that it was actually Leia in the costume. Sorry for the spoiler alert people, but by now you should have seen this movie. Boushh's design is another reason why I love Jabba's Return of the Jedi chapters. There is a huge variety of creatures and tech to be seen, and all of it rather different from one another. Years later when I read Shadows of the Empire (which, if you have not read this, and you are a Star Wars fan, get to it! It's great!) Boushh is mentioned a couple of times, including a mention to his demise. Princess Leia ends up with the armor which she uses a couple of times before she is discovered in it in Jabba's palace. If you want to read up on ole' Boushh, Wookiepedia has an article on him.  Now back in the day in 1983, Kenner had put out a Boushh action figure. I never found one. If I did, I'd probably still have it today; or maybe not. I am on the look out for one complete now, and if Hasbro decides to put out a vintage collection version of Leia in this suit, I might be forced (by myself) to get one. You can also see this art piece here.

Pin-Up of the Day- Admiral Ackbar!

Admiral Ackbar by Taylor Lymbery
There have been many who have made the joke of "it's a trap" from Ackbar's famous line in Return of the Jedi, but I'm more of a "repel" / "magnitude" joke kind of guy. Example: You can't repel artwork of this magnitude! Ok, that was just plain silly. Admiral Ackbar is one of those characters in Return of the Jedi that just sparked my imagination as a kid. He's incredible looking! He's a squid/fish man! I still to this day have my Admiral Ackbar action figurine from 1983. He has some red crayon staining from times when he had been struck with imaginary blaster fire. What can I say, I saw a bunch of violent movies as a kid. If he didn't have blood, the believability just wasn't there. I was a special child. I saw the new Star Wars Vintage Collection Admiral Ackbar not too long ago, and he looks fantastic! He is definitely one of those characters I would add to my Vintage Collection wall, especially if I could get the card signed by Tim Rose who played Ackbar! Maybe I'll pick one up, just in case he shows up at a future Fan Days Convention. Hey, a boy can dream can't he?! You can also see this art piece here.

Taylor's Toy Tuesday's DIY Custom- Bib Fortuna!

Bib Fortuna Custom by Taylor Lymbery

I just recently did an art piece of Bib Fortuna, so I am not going to do a recap of Bib's history. The Bib Fortuna Kenner action figure from 1983 was incredibly cool. If you looked at my personal one from when I was a kid, you can tell I liked him. He is basically missing every accessory and his head broke off, but I managed to keep his head on by wrapping his tentacles around his body. He was broken, yet I held on to him. That's love. So this piece is made from a Creatology brand vinyl action figure. I used bake- hardening clay to build the bottom of the body, the head piece and the armor and staff. Felt was used for the under clothing and I used a heavier material for the over coat. Acrylic paint was used for the detail work and then was sealed with a clear super coater. Once I got the head done, I was surprised that I had made it well enough that the tentacles clear the body armor and allow the head to turn. The staff had to be modified from what the original Kenner action figure had. I had to leave some gap for this custom action figure to be able hold on to the staff. I really like this custom. A lot of work went into him. I am hoping to have a few more of the characters from Jabba's palace scene done soon. We'll see. Now, I've got some important updates, so more pictures will be at the end of this posting. Enjoy the pics. I've got to get back to illustrating comic books! :)

Pin-up of the day- Emperor Palpatine

Emperor Palpatine by Taylor Lymbery
I was told that the first movie I saw in the theater was "The Empire Strikes Back", but I don't remember it. I would have been a baby at that point. I do however remember seeing, "Return of the Jedi" at what was the old Pineywoods theater. (That theater later became the dollar theater and was responsible for me seeing Episode One: The Phantom Menace seventeen times on the big screen.) Return of the Jedi was a huge deal for me. It was my first introduction to science fiction/fantasy and was responsible for hooking me into that kind of story genre for life. When I first see the Emperor in the film, I was a little afraid of him. I do believe that you are supposed to be afraid of him, but I really didn't get that sinking gut feeling of him being a REAL bad guy until I saw him in his thrown room. The lighting in that room was just right to raise the creep factor of Palpatine. I was hooked! Towards the end of the movie when Luke and Vader are fighting in the thrown room and Palpatine is just sitting there, I was sold! The cold blues of the ambient light, the warm splash of light shot onto his face, illuminating his red/orange eyes realIy portrayed pure evil in my youthful eyes, especially when he shot lightning out of his fingers! I thought this was the best movie ever! In all honesty, I think of Empire as the best Star Wars film, but this movie does hold the best theater experiences for me growing up. Now I never got an Emperor action figure when I was a kid. Most of my Return of the Jedi action figures were characters featured in Jabba's palace. When the Power of the Force 2 series came out, you can bet that I had an Emperor, even the one with the lightning feature! I have since got rid of those toys, but I did hold on to one. When I was in Junior college, I had to make a quick run right before art class to Wal-Mart down the street. I ran in to get The Emperor 12" action figure/doll. I remember running back to class and hiding my newly bought treasure in my backpack. Every time I went to get something out of my backpack, I would have a whole wave of Jedi nostalgia hit me. I could still see the Death Star 2 being built, Jabba's sail barge being blown up, the ewoks battling the white robot people (Stormtroopers), and the epic saber duel of our hero Luke and his father, all the while sitting next to my own hero, my father. It truly was a great experience for me and always makes me smile when I reflect back on it. These days I have that same Emperor doll sitting above my desk. You can also see this art piece here.

Furry Friday- The Wampa Ice Creature!

Wampa Ice Creature by Taylor Lymbery
No cute kittens, puppies, or baby sloths today. Instead I bring you a fuzzy creature from the sixth planet in the Hoth system, the Wampa (ice creature). Here's what wookieepedia has to say about Wampas

Wampa ice creatures were carnivorous predatory reptomammals indigenous to the remote Outer Rim Territories ice planet Hoth. The bipedal beasts stood over two meters in height with shaggy white fur constantly stained by the blood and guts of slaughtered prey. Wampas were armed with jagged yellow teeth and deadly claws. Primarily solitary hunters, wampas occasionally hunted in packs, preferring to ambush their prey from the camouflage of Hoth's snow banks and blizzards. Stunned victims were carried back to the creatures' lairs, typically large ice caves, where the wampas ate at their leisure. The planet's omnivorous tauntauns formed the bulk of the wampas' prey, although they would attack anything they encountered. The Alliance to Restore the Republic's Echo Base on Hoth came under constant wampa assaults in 3 ABY.
While rarely seen away from their remote homeworld, wampas were known to have participated in illegal gladiatorial combat venues. They were highly valued among big-game hunters for the challenge that came with hunting the creatures, as well as for their pelts, stuffed heads, and other miscellaneous souvenirs that commanded high prices on the black market. Wampas were later protected under legislation to prevent endangered species from falling into extinction by the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances.

This was a commission piece I did for a good friend of mine, Brynna, who you can hear on the fun podcast, "The Loosely Based". When I was searching for pictures of the Wampa, I had the hardest time finding one specific look. Fan art, Comics, and movie set stills all kind of change the look a little. At first I wondered why that was, then the answer came to me; the dude's covered in thick white hair on an ice planet. It's going to hard to see what he looks like. So, my Wampa might be "off" a lilttle, but hopefully you still enjoy it! You can also see this art piece here.

Pin-up of the day- Bib Fortuna!

Bib Fortuna by Taylor Lymbery
I'm taking a little break in the Masters of the Universe sketch cards to do some pre- Fan Days Convention art work. Today's piece is Bib Fortuna! So here's the low down. Bib is a Twi'lek from Ryloth. He is the majordomo to Jabba the Hutt. He makes appearances in the Star Wars movies, "The Phantom Menace" and "Return of the Jedi". In the expanded universe, Bib Fortuna was kicked out of the Twi'lek society for exporting a weak spice called Ryll. From there, he had various jobs smuggling spice before he landed a job with Jabba the Hutt. In the service of Jabba, Bib would prey on other members of his society, forcing some into slavery in the palace. There is a lot more info on wookiepedia if you want to read up on Bib Fortuna. There is a great short story called, "Best Birthday Ever" in the fourth volume of Star Wars Tales of Bib "Oltxalt" Fortuna (as name appears on his license in the short story) procuring the Rancor! It's a funny story. As far as action figures, Bib Fortuna has been made several times throughout the continuing Star Wars action figure lines. I am waiting to see when they will put out a Fortuna in the Vintage Collection which would be nice. When that one comes out, I will try to procure a nice sample on card. My favorite Bib action Figure is the original Kenner Return of the Jedi vintage action figure.  I had one of theses growing up. His head broke off, so I just wrapped his tentacles around his body. I then lost his staff, cloak, and body armor. I still held on to him. I just recently replaced my Bib Fortuna with a complete one that I got at the Dallas Vintage Toy Store. I will use my broken Bib for customizing. You can also see this art piece here.

Just a quick update: I did go ahead and purchase a table for the Fan Days Convention in October. So I will be there (given that I don't have another mishap).

Taylor's Toy Tuesday's DIY Custom- Mossman!

Mossman Custom by Taylor Lymbery

Mossman has to be one of my favorite Masters of the Universe characters of all time, so it was just a matter of time till I got around to doing a custom vinyl figurine for him. I am so happy with how this guy turned out. I made him from a Creatology Ape vinyl DIY toy kit. When I saw this kit, I automatically thought of Mossman. That's a good feeling when that happens. I made some Sculpey clay pieces that I blended in to the vinyl and painted over all of it. My Mossman is flocked with model grass. I felt that was fitting considering he is the master of the environment. Instead of giving him the traditional mace, I decided to give him a spiked mace with a wrapped vine to add to the detailing of the club portion. I used the greatest gold paint mixed with a little yellow for the armor. The gold paint is called, "Aztec Gold"! Brilliant! I talked about Aztec Gold for about two weeks before my sweetheart told me it was getting old. I do feel that I need to re-flock the back of his arms to cover the white that is showing through the flocking. I just need to find the right color mix of paint and glue again. I'll get this done before the next convention. I'm thinking of having the three customs I've done so far at the Fan Days Convention. If you would like to see them in person, come by by booth and check them out. Now, I've got some important updates, so more pictures will be at the end of this posting. Enjoy the pics. I've got to get back to illustrating comic books! :)
