Sketch Card of the Day- Snout Spout!

Snout Spout Sketch Card by Taylor Lymbery

Today's deviation is Snout Spout! Ok, so this guy has an elephant head. There are times I think that this type of mash up only works in the Masters of the Universe, um, universe. Ok, I know it only works in the MOTU world. As far as I know, there was not a lot of background story on this guy before the Classics version toy came out last year with a new biography for him. And I have to admit, I really like the bio. The quick idea is that this guy was kidnapped by the Horde and fitted with cybernetic parts. He was able to escape, and seeing what he was, took the name Snout Spout and used his mechanical trunk to shoot water. Interesting; do they have elephants on Eternia or Etheria?  I don't know, but he became the elephant headed heroic master of firefighting! I had this guy in the vintage toy form when I was a kid. He was pretty cool. He came around towards the end of the line when a lot of fans feel that the Masters of the Universe was getting a little too weird (Not sure that is entirely possible). I really liked him. This guy is one of those characters that you think is cool, but can't bring yourself to get on your own. I never sought this action figure on my own. I thought he was silly. He was given to me by a friend and I never would have liked him if I didn't have him in my hands! I think his action feature mixed with his appearance mixed with actually holding him is what made him cool. Does that make any sense? I'm still after a vintage version of this guy, and I am also after the NECA statction 200X design of him (this sketch card is based on that design), AND the Masters of the Universe Classics release of him too. Again, he seems silly, but because it's Masters of the Universe, I think he works! You can also see this sketch card here.

Just a quick update: I did go ahead and purchase a table for the Fan Days Convention in October. So I will be there (given that I don't have another mishap).

Now, you mighty be asking what this Marvin Dog media is. I've got answers. I had been working with a good friend of mine, Jeff McGee, before I got sick on designing logos and banners for a podcast that I am on and logos and banners of podcasts that other friends are on. I have listened to all of the shows so far and they are great! Jeff and I are on the show where we talk about toys! (Go figure, I mean Go action figure!) That show is called Talking toys with Taylor and Jeff. The other two shows are The pilot episode, where Jeff and Josh Taylor break down the Pilot Episode in TV series, and The Loosely Based Podcast where Husband and wife, Brynna and Jeff, compare the book to the movie adaptation! Again, the shows are great! If you are interested in what we got, go to Marvindogmedia.com  and give us a listen. Sketch Card of the Day -Bow!

Bow Sketch Card by Taylor Lymbery

Today's deviation is Bow!  I never put a lot of stock into wanting any She-Ra action figures until these last couple of years when Mattel put out some She-Ra Characters in the Masters of the Universe Classics toy line. One of those such characters is Bow, the rebellion's best archer! This card is based on the Masters of the Universe Classics Bow action figure. I missed on getting this version of him when he came to the online store last year. Ever since I saw the toy review on him, I've opened my eyes to this character and have planned to not miss his Classics toy again! He's a pretty cool dude! And...as much as I think the vintage She-ra toys are kind of goofy and girly, and I'm not sure if I want to be that guy who has She-Ra action figures on his toy shelf, I WOULD be willing to add this guy's vintage toy to my Masters of the Universe collection. And before you judge me, let me finish. I would definitely add his vintage figure if I had the Classics version action figure, cause  it's good to have a well rounded collection to show not only the new (Classics), but also the roots (Vintage). Jeez! Just ignore the heart on his chest and he'll be cool. You can also see this sketch card here.

Just a quick update: I did go ahead and purchase a table for the Fan Days Convention in October. So I will be there (given that I don't have another mishap).

Sketch Card of the Day- She-Ra!

She-Ra Sketch Card by Taylor Lymbery

Today's deviation is She-Ra!  Ok, now before anyone get all angry; yes, I know that She-Ra is not actually a part of Masters of the Universe, but instead a true character of She-Ra Princess of Power. But seeing that Mattel has smashed up the two lines of Masters of the Universe and Princess of Power together in the Masters of the Universe Classics toy line and She-Ra is the sister of He-man, I don't mind the cross-over. Now, I have had a few She-Ra POP characters in my MOTU sketch card line-up, but figured I would make note of the difference in cartoon and toy line now, seeing that the character is She-Ra. Not that it matters. Over my years, I have had many conversations with others about liking She-Ra growing up. I'll go ahead and get this out; No I did not have a crush on She-Ra growing up. Sorry. She just didn't do it for me. I don't know what to say, I was a Sorceress guy growing up. I will have to say, that I have learned to appreciate She-Ra over these last few years. I'm sold with the overall viking/valkyrie look in the costume, but she's still not my choice in ladies in the MOTU/POP line-up. Sorry She-Ra fans...If you are hurt by my choice, just keep in mind that she is the most powerful woman in the universe! There. All better. You can also see this sketch card here.

Just a quick update: I did go ahead and purchase a table for the Fan Days Convention in October. So I will be there (given that I don't have another mishap).

Sketch Card of the Day- Snake Face!

Snake Face Sketch Card by Taylor Lymbery

Today's deviation is Snake Face!  I know that this guy is essentially a male remake of Medusa, but I was so excited to see him in the 200X cartoon when the snake men escaped from the void! When I saw the vintage Snake Face figurine as a kid, I thought he was really cool. I love the fact that he would have snakes come out of his eyes, mouth and neck with a little switch on his back. The idea was that when the snakes came out of his face he would freeze his enemies with fear and turn them to stone, just like Medusa! As with many other characters in the Masters of the Universe franchise, the creators pull from different mythologies and make something quite a bit fun. When the 200X cartoon aired, I was happy to see him with the snakemen. In the 200X series cartoon, he was presented as this regal, more human shaped snakeman. Instead of the snakes coming out of his face, his face would light up and snakes would uncoil themselves from his hair. Correction. I should say that his hair WAS the snakes. He did have one snake come from his face, and that one would be his tongue. So, in the vain of the title "Snake Face", he still had one actually come from his face. So, needless to say I was excited about getting a Snake Face action figure once I saw his other snake men brothers made in toy form. (Kobra Khan, King Hsss, General Rattlor) Unfortunately we never got one. We did however get a Staction figure by NECA. And I have to tell you, the sculpt on it is amazing! It's a beautiful piece! I was never able to get one of the staction figures. He's pretty rare so I doubt I ever will, but I haven't given up on the fact that MOTU fans might get a really cool action figure of this character in the Classics line. I just hope he is presented with both possibilities of Snake Face! You know, one with snakes coming out all over the face, and one that's a bit more tamer like the 200X version. I know it might be asking a lot, but a boy can dream... You can also see this sketch card here.

Just a quick update: I did go ahead and purchase a table for the Fan Days Convention in October. So I will be there (given that I don't have another mishap).

Sketch Card of the Day- Sssqueeze!

Sssqueeze Sketch Card by Taylor Lymbery

Today's deviation is Sssqueeze!  Man oh man, did I want this action figure when I was a kid! This character was all arms, and when I say all arms I mean that he had 12 inches of arms for a 5 inch toy. The idea with this guy was that he had snake arms that were like a boa constrictor. He would (yep you got it) sssqueeze his victims! The vinatage figurine had more of a Tyrannosaurus Rex head, which seemed a little off to me. When the 200X cartoon came around, I was excited to see how Sssqueeze was remade into a true snake man. I was hoping that fans would get a cool action figure of him for the toy line. No such luck, but like Rio Blast and a few other redesigned characters from the 200X series, we did get a Statue from the company NECA. This sketch card design is based on that 200X design. I really love this design, but my one complaint with him was that his redesign had snake faces on his hands. The vintage didn't have face hands. Instead he had regular snake hands. Oh wait! I can't believe I just said regular snake hands. I know snakes don't have hands, and I know He-Man is a fantasy, but come on! Funny thing to think about is every time this guy claps his hands, he's actually skull bashing himself! Maybe Mattel will offer interchangeable hands with and without faces for the Masters of the Universe Classics action figure! You can also see this sketch card here.

Just a quick update: I did go ahead and purchase a table for the Fan Days Convention in October. So I will be there (given that I don't have another mishap).

Sketch Card of the Day- Flogg!

Flogg Sketch Card by Taylor Lymbery

Today's deviation is Flogg! Flogg, or Brakk, is the leader of the Space Mutants in the New Adventures of He-Man series. Working with Skeletor to take the heroic planet of Primus, Flogg uses his dim wits and whip to, well, try over and over again to take Primus. I remember seeing a Flogg action figure when I was young. He's pretty cool. I always wanted one, but never really got around to adding him to my collection. I'm not exactly sure why. He had this cool action feature of whip slapping power that made me wish it had been added to Beast Man years before! (It was a bit of waist twist paired with the arm drop.) I did think of Flogg as a pretty cruel hearted and brilliant leader, but the cartoon had different ideas with the evil space mutants that I had given a more serious characterization in my mind. When I finally saw the cartoon years later, I was a little disappointed in how Flogg was portrayed. Sometimes a bit silly is too much. C'est la vie. What can you do.  You can also see this sketch card here.

Just a quick update: I did go ahead and purchase a table for the Fan Days Convention in October. So I will be there (given that I don't have another mishap).

Sketch Card of Day- The Mighty Spector!

The Mighty Spector by Taylor Lymbery
Today's deviation is The Mighty Spector! I think that this has to be one of the most controversial characters to come out as f here recent. For Mattel's Masters of the Universe 30th anniversary, they are making characters from past contest and, fan designs, sculptor designs, comic book writers designs, and Scott "Toy Guru" Neitlich, which is The Mighty Spector. I just want to get my own personal feelings out of the way before I continue any further. I really don't like the design, but I think he's an ok character having read the bio. For me, this character stands out like a sore thumb. A lot of MOTU fans complained about his mask mimicking Dead Pool from Marvel Comics. That doesn't bother me too much. What bothers me is the Spade on his armor. I just don't get it. Is he an ace in the hole? Does he play poker? Is it a military thing? I just don't get it. Other than that, he's ok in my opinion. It does make me wonder what all the fans are hating about, though. I wonder if it has anything to do with this being Scott Neitlich's design... You can also see this sketch card here.

Just a quick update: I did go ahead and purchase a table for the Fan Days Convention in October. So I will be there (given that I don't have another mishap).

Sketch Card of the Day- Rio Blast!

Rio Blast Sketch Card by Taylor Lymbery
Today's deviation is Rio Blast! I just want to start off by stating how out of place I feel this character is in the MOTU universe! I love this character, but the cyborg gun toting limbs space cowboy doesn't really fit. Secondly, his name screams something of a extremely Cool-Aid flavor, strange love making act or a water slide park from the early 90's! (Tubular) But yet, here we have a cyborg with hidden blaster toting appendages in space marshall digs with an incredibly simple yet flamboyant name. As a kid, I remember searching for Rio Blast. I knew he didn't fit, but he was so unique that I just had to have him in my collection! I would imagine what he could do to help He-Man and the Masters with all of the gun power that he was toting. And then I would think of scenarios where Skeletor would offer him a job playing in on his space cowboy loneliness personality to turn him from the Masters. In the end, his loyal heart of gold would bring him back to the good and he would blast evil with the super awesome giant blaster backpack and thigh and chest cannons! I imagined a lot, but was never able to get him. To this day, I am still trying to get a Rio Blast that will not cut too deep into my toy budget. Years later, I essentially got my "Rio Blast" when I got Marshall Bravestarr, but it just wasn't the same. When the 200X series was being made, I had really hoped that Rio would be made in action figure form. We weren't so lucky. He did however get made in the MYP vain as a staction or statue figurine. I am also after this one... at a decent price. So far, no luck. So, with the classics series running, I'm going to have to breakdown and get Mr. Blast. Let's hope he worth the price tag by the time he comes out! You can also see this sketch card here.

Sketch Card of the day- Whiplash!

Whiplash Sketch Card by Taylor Lymbery
Today's deviation is Whiplash! Growing up, I never really appreciated Whiplash like I do today. All in all, I remember feeling that his look on the vintage action figure was kinda, well... goofy. It was his teeth. The one thing that I did enjoy about this figure was the spring waste tail smashing action feature! He could clear a row of annoying Cobra soldiers firing at him! (cross brand play scenerio where Cobra Commander taps into a wormhole leading to snake mountain (good stuff!)) But overall, I did not really love this character. When the MYP or 200X series of action figures came to be, I had to change my mind. The Four Horsemen (Toy Sculptors) did a fantastic job redesigning this character! Easily, he is one of my favorite character designs in the MYP collection! The sculpt that they did is just beautiful! If you have not seen the design, go and look it up now! Now, Mattel has put out a Whiplash in the Classics line. The design goes back to more of the classic vintage look, hence the "Classics" in the title of, "Masters of the Universe Classics". I don't have this version, but I do want to get him. At first, I was adamant about getting him due to the fact that a load of fans said that his 200X head just looked ridiculous on the vintage styled body. After seeing more pics of the 200X head on the Classics body, I kind of don't agree. Yes the Classics 200X head is bigger than 200X head is in comparison to their bodies, but I'm ok with that. Oh, and the Classics version also has the vintage head with it, and I still think it looks absolutely ridiculous! It's the teeth.

You can subscribe to the shows on itunes and get up to date info on upcoming shows on facebook:

Sketch Card of the day- The Faceless One!

Facelees One sketch card by Taylor Lymbery
Today's deviation is The Faceless One! If there is one character that stands out the most as an original creation of the 200X modern Masters of the Universe cartoon series, it's got to be The Faceless one! This guy is really cool. In the cartoon he's the father of Evil Lyn and the keeper of one of the most powerful artifacts in all of Eternia, the Ram's Stone! Back at the end of last year, Mattel made a MOTU Classics version of this character in action figure form. His bio on the package was well thought out stating that this man was once on the Eternian Council of Elders and broke a treaty that gave him a daughter and stripped him of his humanity. He got a really awesome back story! If you want to read his back story on Mattycollector, go here. All in all, he's pretty cool, but not my favorite translation of a 200X character. I think my biggest complaint was the way the shoulder armor/ cape/cowl just sits on him and makes him seem swallowed by his clothes. Don't get me wrong, I like the figurine and wrote a positive review about him, but I feel that one piece could have been done better. You can also see this sketch card here.
