Artmor of the Day- Beast Fett!

This last year, I made my Artmor set of plates into Beast Man's Chest. It is a follow up to last years He-Man's Chest and the year before's Skeletor's Chest. As most of you know, I am a HUGE Masters of the Universe fan. These Artmor plates help me bring my fandom love of MOTU into the realm of Star Wars. The money made from this set and many other fantastic Artmor art pieces go to a cause that I am a strong supporter of, Toys for Tots. I talk toys, I customize toys and I love toys. My world was shaped due to the imaginative play of tiny articulated plastic and I feel it is important for every child to have that access to imagination in their youth. Painting of the day- Daryl Fett!

The Sci-Fi Expo is this coming weekend and I will be there February 8-9th. I'm offering the "Two Super Cops Walk into a Bar" print as an 11" X 14" exclusive for the Sci-Fi Expo on February 8-9th. Now, this piece here, called, Daryl Fett, is a commission piece for Joel at the Darth Mall vintage toy store. He wanted a mash up of two of his favorite characters; Boba Fett from Star Wars and Daryl from the Walking Dead. Normally I go for pen and ink Illustration with watercolor and marker coloring, but I really wanted something special this time. I decided to set out the acrylics and paint this commission piece. I like the way it turned out. The size of the picture is 11"x 14" and it is acrylic on 60lb polar matte paper. I've had a few people ask me about it as a print, so I'm thinking of making a small run of this piece as a print. If you are wanting a print, let me know, and I'll see if I can get some printed. When You can see this piece in my deviantart gallery as well here.

Custom Toy of the Day- E-Rok Ewok!

I've never trusted Ewoks and I never will. I can never forgive them for the death of my... wait, wrong series. I'm wanting something more, "Nu-cha"! Ewoks have always had a mixed reaction with Star Wars fans. Some people love them, others absolutely hate them. I've always thought they were just ok. Here recently though, I've started to have an appreciation for them. Much of that appreciation comes from the Star Wars in Character podcast. The rest of the appreciation comes from collecting the vintage ewoks from Kenner. I really like those toys! Anyways... I was approached by a hometown friend not too long ago to make a Ewok playing a guitar as a toy commission. I dubbed him the E-Rok. I had a lot of fun making this guy, but found him a challenge to articulate. In the end, there is no joint movement due to the size and detail. I wanted more sculpting detail and at a three inch scale, articulation was lost. I used cloth goods to make the cowl and straps for the bone helm and guitar. I am very happy with how he turned out and my friend is extremely happy with the Ewok.

Painting of the Day- Picnic on Dantooine!

Not too long ago, I was approached to make a couple of art pieces for a new program called, "The Artmor Project". This is a new program created by the guys over at NeoZaz.com. The program is sixty Star Wars Artists, Podcasters, Fans, and Community Pioneers who were sent blank Mandalorian armor sets to create custom one of a kind pieces of Art. These original works will be auctioned of as the corner stone of the annual Star Wars in Character Star Wars Toy Drive benefitting Toys for Tots. I am a big fan of Toys for Tots and couldn't pass up this grand invitation! This was the first piece that I finished. It is called, "Picnic on Dantooine". Action Figure Friday- Star Wars Expanded Universe Air Speeder!

Ralph McQuarrie truly was the design God behind the original trilogy. There were a few things that did not make the final cut. That is expected, I have a load of unused designs that are sitting around from Xenex the Bug Man. In the late 90's, Hasbro, under the Kenner banner, made three extended universe vehicle toys with pilots based on those design drawings for the Power of the Force 2 toyline. The one that I got recently was the Air Speeder. This was one of those vehicle sets that I had set out to find when the toys released. I had found one at a Target in my home town, but I was short on cash. I new I was getting a paycheck the following day and would then have money. So, I hid the toy elsewhere in the store in order to hopefully buy it later. I went back the following day and it was no where to be found. I want to be upset, but, to be honest, I can't fault the Target floor recovery team for being so good at their job. Since then, I would look for this toy on ebay, but I wasn't sold on spending $30.00 on it or getting one that was in bad shape. I eventually stopped looking for a long time. The first day of the Dallas Comic Con 2013 my best toy buddy Jeff from Marvindog media presents me with a boxed version of this toy. I squealed like a crazy person! I debated if I should leave the toy in the box for about 45 seconds and then tore into the package. I have the box packed away and I have this toy now hanging from my ceiling. Now to find the Cloud Car!

Taylor's Toy Tuesday's DIY Custom- The Emperor's Royal Guard!

This is not the first time I have oohed and awed about the Emperor's Royal Guard. You really have to work hard to not like the simplistic and organic design of these guys.They have a nice predatory bird look designed in their helmet. They have are in al red and covered in awesomely designed robes. They have those scary soulless visors built into their helmets. Dude! What I'm trying to say is this, "These guys look really cool!" 

For this custom toy, I used a Roseart Color Blank body. I tried to keep the simple look of the Royal Guard uniform by not adding to much detail in how I made pieces. Here's an example: Instead of shaping a shoulder piece of the cowl to fit to the helmet, I dropped that feature and focused on the detail painting in the helmet. I extended the legs and painted the body to mimic the dark maroon of the Kenner Action figure. I then painted black lines in to be the stitching. I cut an under-skirt of red felt and stitched it in the back. To finish off the toy, I cut a red cape and glued it with foil for shaping and a dark red for the inside. I put it over the neck spoke and popped the head on. I then made a force pike and trimmed it to fit in the Guard's hand. I do have plans to make another Guard. I would like to pair them with an Emperor Custom. We shall see. Now, I've got some important updates, so more pictures will be at the end of this posting. Enjoy the pics. Pin-up of the Day- Boba Fett

Oh, Boba Fett... This guy has to be just about everyone's favorite bounty hunter. Boba fett proves to me what a really good costume design can do for a character. The fact that he looks really cool makes you want to know more about him. Boba makes his first Star Wars universe appearance in the Star Wars holiday special in animated form. His armor coloring is a bit different than what we are used to seeing in Empire Strikes back and Return of the Jedi and looks closer to what we see in Jango Fett's armor in the prequels. Hasbro made a Boba Fett action figure in the fashion of his animated debut. After the animated spot, we get to see Boba in classic Kenner action figure form a year before the Empire Strikes back film. I think that this just lead to more of the coolness of Boba Fett before anyone really ever saw him on film. He is then seen in the Empire Strikes Back movie and then Boba was seen again in Return of the Jedi in the beginning of the film during the Jabba the Hutt scenes where he died. He was knocked into a Sarlacc and was slowly digested over a thousand years! That is how I know of his demise. Now the books tell a different story. Apparently Boba is rescued from the pit of Carkoon and goes on to become an even bigger retcon in the Star Wars Extended Universe. Blah... Trust me, I can see why some people would want him to survive. He looks really cool, but for everyone who likes the Star Wars films, Boba died in the Battle over the Sarlacc pit of Carkoon. End of story. As far as toys, Boba has been made into many action figures. I have a handful, but got rid of 5 handfuls throughout the years.That should show what marketing does to capitalize on the coolness of character design. That should also prove Boba's coolness. Pin-up of the Day- Han Solo (in Endor Trench Coat)

I have wondered for a while why I had not done a pin-up of Han Solo until recently. I'm not sure why. Han Solo is one of the coolest characters in the Star Wars universe! No seriously! So here he is, Han Solo in his Endor Jacket! I chose to do this version of Han Solo for the color of the card stock. This was a commission for a young lady by the name of Candace. She bought my 3PO(yellow cardstock), R2(blue cardstock), and Chewie(brown cardstock). To not have a repeating color within the four pieces, I chose the green and played off of his camo jacket that he wore while the rebels are on the forest moon of Endor. I think he turned out great! Out of all of the vintage Kenner Han Solo action figures, I think I like this Trench Coat version the best! It's a toss up between this version and the Hoth version Han Solo action figure. Action Figure of the Day has some pretty convincing reasons on why the Trench Coat version of Han might be the best.  I never owned a Han Solo action figure from the old Kenner line. I'd like to change that one day, but we'll see. By the way, did you know that the Chewbacca action figure can also wear Han Solo's Endor trench coat? I was going through my friend, Jeff's, vintage collection, when I found Chewie wearing Han's Jacket. I'm not sure why he was in it,  but he looks good in it. You can also see this art piece here.

Fan Days 2012 Recap.

The Fan Days Convention was fantastic! I had a ton of fun! I got to meet a lot of fans, and fellow artists. While I was there, I got to meet David Prowse, the man in the Darth Vader suit. I got my 2010 Empire Strikes Backs Vintage Vader signed by him. He's a really nice guy. While I worked the table with Jeff from MarvinDog Media,  I got a bunch of pin-ups done. The first pin-up was "Bib talks to Jabba". I used watercolor and ink wash to make this piece. I later was commissioned by a young lady by the name of Kayla that wanted a Goonies custom piece. She wanted the Goonies crew with her added in with the group. I had a lot of fun with this piece.

After she got the piece from me, she took my art over to Sean Astin to have him sign it under his character illustration. She then got the piece placed in a plaque and had a label made for it. She brought the piece by to show me and I couldn't help but to smile! I felt so honored to have made this piece and have Sean see it, and to have made this piece and it be a wonderful memory for Kayla and her family. You guys rock! I hope to see you all again one day!

 Later on, I did a quick pin-up of good ole' Xenex the Bug Man for a gentleman who was getting all of the artist from the convention to do a piece in his convention Sketch book. I sold a lot of Xenex the Bug Man issues and I hope that I picked up a few new fans. I did have, number one Xenex fan, Reese stop by to pick up issue 4 and chat with me about issue 5 which should be ready for the Sci-fi Expo in February at the Irving Convention Center. Reese scared both Jeff and I as she was dressed as one of the scariest weeping angels from Doctor Who that I have seen. Reese and Karri, you guys did a great job on the costume! 

I also sold my convention C-3PO, R2-D2, and Chewbacca to a young couple at the convention. They also commissioned me to do a Han Solo art piece. It's a good one! I'll post that one on Thursday. They gave me a Judge Dredd badge that they had picked up in the Freebie room. I'm a huge Dredd fan so I was super stoked! Candace, if are reading this, thank you so very much! I wish you and your hubby all the best in the world! If you make it to the Sci-fi Expo, stop by my booth and I'll give you a print of your choosing! 

Megaman from Legends by Taylor Lymbery

I also had a commission for a Legends Megaman for a couple of awesome ladies who brought me some very delicious nachos! They kept Jeff and I and the awesome Artist Devin and his friend Brookes from Cheshire Cat Studios, entertained at the tables talking video games and  cartoons. Jeff and I made a lot of really good contacts with toy vendors, artists and fellow podcasters. We got to visit with the Awesome Taffeta Darling and Jeff was able to get a lot of really good toy memories from people who stopped by the table. By the time the final bell rang for us to close the booth and head home, I became a little sad. I had a blast interacting with everyone and being at the convention. 

There's been an update to the store tabs on both Xenex the Bug Man, and this site. All of the print on demand issues, cafepress stores and commissions info will be under the new store tab on both this site and the Xenex the Bug Man site. Hopefully this page makes shopping a bit easier. Go and check it out!

Now, you mighty be asking what this Marvin Dog media is. I've got answers. Jeff and I are on the show where we talk about toys! (Go figure, I mean Go action figure!) That show is called Talking toys with Taylor and Jeff. The other two shows are The pilot episode, where Jeff and Josh Taylor break down the Pilot Episode in TV series, and The Loosely Based Podcast where Brynna and Jeff compare the book to the movie adaptation!
