Pin-up of the Day- Boba Fett

Oh, Boba Fett... This guy has to be just about everyone's favorite bounty hunter. Boba fett proves to me what a really good costume design can do for a character. The fact that he looks really cool makes you want to know more about him. Boba makes his first Star Wars universe appearance in the Star Wars holiday special in animated form. His armor coloring is a bit different than what we are used to seeing in Empire Strikes back and Return of the Jedi and looks closer to what we see in Jango Fett's armor in the prequels. Hasbro made a Boba Fett action figure in the fashion of his animated debut. After the animated spot, we get to see Boba in classic Kenner action figure form a year before the Empire Strikes back film. I think that this just lead to more of the coolness of Boba Fett before anyone really ever saw him on film. He is then seen in the Empire Strikes Back movie and then Boba was seen again in Return of the Jedi in the beginning of the film during the Jabba the Hutt scenes where he died. He was knocked into a Sarlacc and was slowly digested over a thousand years! That is how I know of his demise. Now the books tell a different story. Apparently Boba is rescued from the pit of Carkoon and goes on to become an even bigger retcon in the Star Wars Extended Universe. Blah... Trust me, I can see why some people would want him to survive. He looks really cool, but for everyone who likes the Star Wars films, Boba died in the Battle over the Sarlacc pit of Carkoon. End of story. As far as toys, Boba has been made into many action figures. I have a handful, but got rid of 5 handfuls throughout the years.That should show what marketing does to capitalize on the coolness of character design. That should also prove Boba's coolness. Furry Friday- The Wampa Ice Creature!

No cute kittens, puppies, or baby sloths today. Instead I bring you a fuzzy creature from the sixth planet in the Hoth system, the Wampa (ice creature). Here's what wookieepedia has to say about Wampas. 

Wampa ice creatures were carnivorous predatory reptomammals indigenous to the remote Outer Rim Territories ice planet Hoth. The bipedal beasts stood over two meters in height with shaggy white fur constantly stained by the blood and guts of slaughtered prey. Wampas were armed with jagged yellow teeth and deadly claws. Primarily solitary hunters, wampas occasionally hunted in packs, preferring to ambush their prey from the camouflage of Hoth's snow banks and blizzards. Stunned victims were carried back to the creatures' lairs, typically large ice caves, where the wampas ate at their leisure. The planet's omnivorous tauntauns formed the bulk of the wampas' prey, although they would attack anything they encountered. The Alliance to Restore the Republic's Echo Base on Hoth came under constant wampa assaults in 3 ABY.
While rarely seen away from their remote homeworld, wampas were known to have participated in illegal gladiatorial combat venues. They were highly valued among big-game hunters for the challenge that came with hunting the creatures, as well as for their pelts, stuffed heads, and other miscellaneous souvenirs that commanded high prices on the black market. Wampas were later protected under legislation to prevent endangered species from falling into extinction by the Galactic Federation of Free Alliances.  

This was a commission piece I did for a good friend of mine, Brynna, who you can hear on the fun podcast, "The Loosely Based". When I was searching for pictures of the Wampa, I had the hardest time finding one specific look. Fan art, Comics, and movie set stills all kind of change the look a little. At first I wondered why that was, then the answer came to me; the dude's covered in thick white hair on an ice planet. It's going to hard to see what he looks like. So, my Wampa might be "off" a lilttle, but hopefully you still enjoy it! You can also see this art piece here.

Just a quick update: I did go ahead and purchase a table for the Fan Days Convention in October. I'll be there with a ton of new work to sell, a new issue of Xenex the Bug Man and new posters. So I'll see you there!
