Custom Toy Play-Set- The Scared Temple: Part 1

I have seen a lot of Toy Photography being made in the past year or so. And seeing successful pictures means that there is some sort of set piece or background in the picture to add to the realism of the setup. So when my son asked me to make him a play-set for his Masters of the Universe toys, I said, "You know, I should show a lot of people how to craft a play-set out of crafting materials.". And so, this video was born.

This is a part one to a two part creation for this set. The second video will be all about painting the creation. I will go over painting techniques and texturing techniques in that video. So...stay tuned!!!

Jeff and I are having an 8th anniversary of our show, Talking Toys with Taylor and Jeff! It has been a great ride. Celebrate the occasion by going through our backlog of shows on MarvinDogMedia!

Post Dallas Comic Con: Fan Days 2013 Fun!

I had a fantastic time at the Dallas Comic Con: Fan Days 2013 this last weekend. Everyone that stopped by to chat with Jeff and I were great and I would like to take some time out to thank all of you! I had some great commission pieces, I met Jason David Frank, aka, Tommy the Green/White Power Ranger, and got to see my convention friends. My friend and table neighbor, Drew, kept me from slacking on my commissions, as always, and I made enough to get the next Dallas Comic Con: Sci-Fi Expo table. With some of the extra money, I might try my hand at Helio Con in January. I had a blast and can't wait to do it again. Now, here's some pictures of commissions and stuff!

Thank you, Karri for this pic with Reese!

I will have a table for the Dallas Comic Con: Sci-Fi Expo, February 8-9th. If you are wanting a pre-Sci-Fi Expo commission, let me know and I'll get it ready for pick up at that show.

I have posted some new shirt designs in my Cafepress store. Head over to my Cafepress store and get a shirt or a couple!

Just to let you know all know, I am taking commissions. If you would like to commission me for original artwork, head over to the commissions tab in store to see how.

If you have not heard about the Podcast called, "Talking Toys with Taylor and Jeff", then it's time I let you know! Jeff and I are on the show where we talk about toys! (Go figure, I mean Go action figure!) Seems simple enough. We pick out a toy line to discuss in each show. We share our childhood memories, our favorite five, and talk about the one toy in the line that got away. Jeff talks about how he cherished his toys and I talk about how they ended up in the garden! The other two shows are The pilot episode, where Jeff and Josh Taylor break down the Pilot Episode in TV series, and The Loosely Based Podcast where Brynna and Jeff compare the book to the movie adaptation! The shows are great! Post Dallas Comic Con 2013 Awesomeness!

I just want to start off by saying thank you, to everyone that stopped by Jeff's and my table. I would then like to give an even bigger thank you to everyone that got comics, art, and prints from me. Your purchases help me keep the tables for these conventions and keep me making art and comics. This recent Dallas Comic Con has been fantastic! I got a nice action figure and vehicle set from Jeff and a few he-man action figures from Darth Mall Toys which one is the vintage Savage He-Man!  I also got a very nice art piece from my nachos fan! I love this piece! I got to see a good friend from my youth, Tim Stuckey, and got to meet his wife. I received a book from Gloria Oliver called, "In the Service of the Samurai" which I can not wait to read. My good buddy, Reese stopped by to visit. She and Taffeta Darling had some awesome Inspector Gadget and Penny cosplay on Friday and she had a stellar Borg queen cosplay outfit on Saturday. I was assimilated...
Jeff got a lot of traffic for Marvin Dog Media. He was recognized for his "Singing Truck Driver" commercial that he did. I have yet to see the whole commercial yet, but what I saw, I could not stop laughing. I'll have to keep my eyes open for when that commercial come on.

I did have a lot of commission work. I probably had more commission work than I had at the last Sci-fi Expo. I was able to try my hand at some very simple anime styled drawings. I think that they turned out pretty good. I made some new sketch cards that I can scan in for future postings. They are all G.I.Joe sketch cards, so I figured I would start a run of those and get to a point of finishing up the Masters of the Universe cards. I had a lot of fun mash-ups. My favorite mash-up was The Blue Ranger Banana. If you know the cartoon that this joke is based on, I applaud you. Below are pictures of the commissions that I did while at the table.

I know that I have already said it, but thank you everyone. I hope to see many of you and many new faces at the Fan Days Convention in October.

I did buy a table for the Dallas Comic Con: Fan Days on October 4th-6th. If you are wanting a pre-Fan Days commission, let me know and I'll get it ready for pick up at that show.

I have posted some new shirt designs in my Cafepress store. Head over to my Cafepress store and get a shirt or a couple!

I have all Xenex the Bug Man comic books available for print on demand. You can see that listing here on my store's tab for comic books.

Just to let you know all know, I am taking commissions. If you would like to commission me for original artwork, head over to the commissions tab in store to see how.

Action Figure Friday- Playmate's Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle's- Foot Soldier!!

Recently, I got a chance to pick up the Foot soldier from the new TMNT toy line. All in all, I am rather happy with this toy, but make no mistake, I do feel as though more could have gone into him. This guy has 10 points of articulation. He has a swivel head, ball swivel shoulders and thighs, and swivel hands, waist and elbows. He has one long sword, one short sword, a scabbard set and two throwing stars. I like that the swords can stow away in the working scabbard. I do kind of wish that there was a peg to do the same for the throwing stars. He boasts a black plastic with a primer grey paint application to his legs, red band painting to his head and has grey plastic for his arms. He looks a lot like the comic run of foot soldiers or even the way that these guys looked in the original film. They have a more realistic appeal over their original playmates release versions (I still have quite a bit of love for that original toy design). Now here's my problem, and has been my dislike for some of the pieces in this line; lack of articulation. I really feel that we could have used a ball jointing in the neck that would made posing a load better. I also feel that we could have used some more articulation in the legs. The articulation could have been in the knee, or even just a swivel in the foot. With his foot already being pre-posed in action form along with his legs, the only one way to really stand pose him is how he is shown above. That usually urks me greatly, but is toned done a little due to the fact that he does look cool and has a working scabbard.

You can find this guy pretty much anywhere including amazon. Here's his listing:

The table for the Sci-Fi Expo on February 9-10th is set up!!! I'll be there with some new work to sell,my pin-up girl posters, the newest issue of Xenex the Bug Man and custom toys. Jeff will be there with me selling some Marvindog media merchandise and taking toy memory recordings! Stop by, say,"hi", and show your support. Here's our booth! You will find us there tomorrow at the convention.

Action Figure (toy) Friday- Dr. Dreadful Zombies Bug Lab!

The other day, I found this little gem on a shelf I was straightening up at work. From the look of the box, I just fell in love! I thought, "My God! How cool would that be if I got that and did a review on it?! I could ask Jeff from the podcast, Talking Toys with Taylor and Jeff to a video review with me on this toy." I always fail to remember that Jeff doesn't like bugs, and this set glorifies itself on the fact that you can make candy versions of creepy crawlies. But, I digress.
The Dr. Dreadful labs toys are made by Umagine which is put out through Spin Master (Spin Master put out the recent Tron Legacy Toys). The toys boast the feature of being able to eat whatever you make in the sets. In other words, this is the naughty food maker to the nice foodmaker, the Easy Bake Oven. Now I only have this one set. There have been other sets that have made me look twice in its direction due to it's looking like absolute coolness! The one set that I would like to add to this is the Organ Grinder. It looks rather impressive. At least the box makes it look impressive.
From what I found with this Bug Lab set is that it is rather easy to use. I had no trouble putting the toy together nor did I have a hard time understanding the directions (unlike the directions to the Ikea furniture). I did notice that when I tried to push the candy gel into the mold, the gel would also push out of the bottom and onto the kitchen counter. I solved this little problem with a little piece of plastic bag set under the candy disc in the candy well. It's not a 100% clean counter approach, but it will get more mix into the mold instead of on the table. All in all, the candy is ok. The grape is way better than the apple mix. The true selling feature of this is being able to watch the candy mix push up into the semi clear mold. it really is fun to watch. I really like the design of this toy set, and initially that is what sold me on getting it. The other was the price. I was able to get this set for a ridiculously low price due to it being on sell. I do wish that the gray plastic was molded in a darker color. And I also wish that the bug molds were in the bluish color like in the package photo, but what can you do. This would be a fun stocking stuffer and/or small gift to give a young boy or any child that enjoys gross things.

Here is a listing of this toy on amazon: Dr. Dreadful Gummy Bugs

Just to let you know all know, I am taking commissions. If you would like to commission me for original artwork, head over to the commissions tab in store to see how.

The long awaited issue 4 of Xenex the Bug Man is now up for order. It's a great looking comic book! Head on over to the Bug Man site and see what I'm talking about!

Birthday Art Pieces! - Bioshock and Batman

Big Daddy Helm by Taylor Lymbery
I have had a couple of friends birthday's roll around this past week. One of my friends, I normally just get a gift card to get video game stuff. I felt that this year should have a bit of a change. I kept with the video game theme (and gift card) and gave him an art piece I made from one of his favorite video games, Bioshock. I've had some suggestions for future pieces in the realm of how I did this one. One is to feature each suit piece that the main game character has to find in order to become Big Daddy. I am really considering that one. The other idea is to feature each helmet from the series. I'm really considering that one due to the fact that I really like the Big Sister helmet. The other idea I have is to portray some of the recognizable costume pieces from various video games that my friend likes. I am considering that possibility as well. If you have a suggestion, feel free to comment.

Damian Batman by Taylor Lymbery
Now the second piece that I made was for a friend who is a big Batman fan. More so, he's a fan of Batman's son, Damian. In the graphic novel of Batman and Son, there is a story in the end that is of Damian in the future. He took over the role of Batman to carry the legacy on. His Batman is pretty rough. So, to have that fun Batman piece, but it not necessarily be Bruce, I decided to pick his favorite series character Robin and put him in his future Batman role. I'm not sure if I'd do any more in this series. That particular story arc ran for one issue. I could do the evil batman. I might consider it as a gift for another birthday or Christmas. I'm not sure yet. This is the second piece that I have given my friend as a gift. The other gift was a bit of a request. It was Charles Darwin fighting an Ape. I need to remind myself to ask him what his favorite piece is. He loves the theme of Darwin fighting an ape. He has another artist's version of that on his fridge.

There's been an update to the store tabs on both Xenex the Bug Man, and this site. All of the print on demand issues, cafepress stores and commissions info will be under the new store tab on both this site and the Xenex the Bug Man site. Hopefully this page makes shopping a bit easier. Go and check it out!

Just a quick update: I did go ahead and purchase a table for the Fan Days Convention in October. So I will be there (given that I don't have another mishap).

Now, you mighty be asking what this Marvin Dog media is. I've got answers. I had been working with a good friend of mine, Jeff McGee, before I got sick on designing logos and banners for a podcast that I am on and logos and banners of podcasts that other friends are on. I have listened to all of the shows so far and they are great! Jeff and I are on the show where we talk about toys! (Go figure, I mean Go action figure!) That show is called Talking toys with Taylor and Jeff. The other two shows are The pilot episode, where Jeff and Josh Taylor break down the Pilot Episode in TV series, and The Loosely Based Podcast where Brynna and Jeff compare the book to the movie adaptation! Again, the shows are great! If you are interested in what we got, go to Marvindogmedia.com  and give us a listen.
