Taylor's Toy Tuesday's DIY Custom- Buzz-Off!

Buzz-Off Custom Toy by Taylor Lymbery
Buzz-Off is an insect man from the Masters of the Universe. He is the heroic spy in the sky! He is without a doubt one of my favorite characters. I have a full run of Buzz-Off action figures in my collection. From the vintage, to the 200X, to the Classics, I love them all! I think what fuels my love of this character is his design. He has a brilliant design adding the bee elements to the man elements while still making him fit perfectly in He-Man's world, Eternia. My Custom toy of Buzz-Off is made from a RoseArt Color Blank Frog body. At first, I wasn't sure what I would use the frog body for. I had thought of doing a Mario inside of a frog suit. I then thought of doing a Battle Toad. I could not get past the idea of a frog. Then one day, I saw the body in a new light. I thought of the frog eyes as being Buzz-Off's helmet sitting on his head. I then extended his body a little to give him a look of having a long thorax. Add big monster feet, a warrior's belt, and insect wings and I was getting closer to what I wanted. After the paint application, I knew that I had made a great Buzz-Off! I then made the axe out of sculpey, painted, and sealed the entire toy. I glued brown pipe cleaner trimmed into pieces create the furry loin cloth. I'm really proud of this toy. I enjoy looking at his paint application and parts made for him. I think I will have a hard time selling him when that time comes!  Now, I've got some important updates, so more pictures will be at the end of this posting. Enjoy the pics. I've got to get back to illustrating comic books! :)

Just to let you know all know, I am taking commissions. If you would like to commission me for original artwork, head over to the commissions tab in store to see how.

All throughout the month of Movember, I'll be growing a mustache to raise awareness of prostate cancer and I'll be taking donations for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Do you want to donate?! Head on over to my Movember page to see photos of me struggling to make a blonde mustache show and to donate!

There's been an update to the store tabs on both Xenex the Bug Man, and this site. All of the print on demand issues, cafepress stores and commissions info will be under the new store tab on both this site and the Xenex the Bug Man site. Hopefully this page makes shopping a bit easier. Go and check it out!

The Xenex the Bug Man website is updated with rather grand news that the long awaited issue 4 is now up for order. It's a great looking comic book! Head on over to the Bug Man site and see what I'm talking about!

Now, you mighty be asking what this Marvin Dog media is. I've got answers. Jeff and I are on the show where we talk about toys! (Go figure, I mean Go action figure!) That show is called Talking toys with Taylor and Jeff. Pin-up of the Day- Boba Fett

Boba Fett art by Taylor Lymbery

Oh, Boba Fett... This guy has to be just about everyone's favorite bounty hunter. Boba fett proves to me what a really good costume design can do for a character. The fact that he looks really cool makes you want to know more about him. Boba makes his first Star Wars universe appearance in the Star Wars holiday special in animated form. His armor coloring is a bit different than what we are used to seeing in Empire Strikes back and Return of the Jedi and looks closer to what we see in Jango Fett's armor in the prequels. Hasbro made a Boba Fett action figure in the fashion of his animated debut. After the animated spot, we get to see Boba in classic Kenner action figure form a year before the Empire Strikes back film. I think that this just lead to more of the coolness of Boba Fett before anyone really ever saw him on film. He is then seen in the Empire Strikes Back movie and then Boba was seen again in Return of the Jedi in the beginning of the film during the Jabba the Hutt scenes where he died. He was knocked into a Sarlacc and was slowly digested over a thousand years! That is how I know of his demise. Now the books tell a different story. Apparently Boba is rescued from the pit of Carkoon and goes on to become an even bigger retcon in the Star Wars Extended Universe. Blah... Trust me, I can see why some people would want him to survive. He looks really cool, but for everyone who likes the Star Wars films, Boba died in the Battle over the Sarlacc pit of Carkoon. End of story. As far as toys, Boba has been made into many action figures. I have a handful, but got rid of 5 handfuls throughout the years. That should show what marketing does to capitalize on the coolness of character design. That should also prove Boba's coolness. Pin-up of the Day- Han Solo (in Endor Trench Coat)

Han Solo art by Taylor Lymbery
I have wondered for a while why I had not done a pin-up of Han Solo until recently. I'm not sure why. Han Solo is one of the coolest characters in the Star Wars universe! No seriously! So here he is, Han Solo in his Endor Jacket! I chose to do this version of Han Solo for the color of the card stock. This was a commission for a young lady by the name of Candace. She bought my 3PO(yellow cardstock), R2(blue cardstock), and Chewie(brown cardstock). To not have a repeating color within the four pieces, I chose the green and played off of his camo jacket that he wore while the rebels are on the forest moon of Endor. I think he turned out great! Out of all of the vintage Kenner Han Solo action figures, I think I like this Trench Coat version the best! It's a toss up between this version and the Hoth version Han Solo action figure. Action Figure of the Day has some pretty convincing reasons on why the Trench Coat version of Han might be the best.  I never owned a Han Solo action figure from the old Kenner line. I'd like to change that one day, but we'll see. By the way, did you know that the Chewbacca action figure can also wear Han Solo's Endor trench coat? I was going through my friend, Jeff's, vintage collection, when I found Chewie wearing Han's Jacket. I'm not sure why he was in it,  but he looks good in it. You can also see this art piece here

Taylor's Toy Tuesday- DIY Preview!!!

I just finished up the Fan Days Convention, so I'm a bit behind in getting some new toys ready. So for today, I'll give you all a sneak peak at what is up for the future of my new custom toy projects. So far, one of them is done. It looks fantastic! I am working on a twin for it. (Hint. Hint.) There is one of the other two that is looking fantastic and is pretty close to done. At this point, I might actually have to say this un-named toy as one of my favorites! It's that good. The other is a nod to one of Jeff's favorite action figures. (Wink!) So without any further delay, here are some preview pictures!

Fan Days 2012 Recap.

Jabba and Bib by Taylor Lymbery

The Fan Days Convention was fantastic! I had a ton of fun! I got to meet a lot of fans, and fellow artists. While I was there, I got to meet David Prowse, the man in the Darth Vader suit. I got my 2010 Empire Strikes Backs Vintage Vader signed by him. He's a really nice guy. While I worked the table with Jeff from MarvinDog Media,  I got a bunch of pin-ups done. The first pin-up was "Bib talks to Jabba". I used watercolor and ink wash to make this piece. I later was commissioned by a young lady by the name of Kayla that wanted a Goonies custom piece. She wanted the Goonies crew with her added in with the group. I had a lot of fun with this piece.

Kayla's Custom Goonies Art Piece
After she got the piece from me, she took my art over to Sean Astin to have him sign it under his character illustration. She then got the piece placed in a plaque and had a label made for it. She brought the piece by to show me and I couldn't help but to smile! I felt so honored to have made this piece and have Sean see it, and to have made this piece and it be a wonderful memory for Kayla and her family. You guys rock! I hope to see you all again one day!

Xenex the Bug Man by Taylor Lymbery
Later on, I did a quick pin-up of good ole' Xenex the Bug Man for a gentleman who was getting all of the artist from the convention to do a piece in his convention Sketch book. I sold a lot of Xenex the Bug Man issues and I hope that I picked up a few new fans. I did have, number one Xenex fan, Reese stop by to pick up issue 4 and chat with me about issue 5 which should be ready for the Sci-fi Expo in February at the Irving Convention Center. Reese scared both Jeff and I as she was dressed as one of the scariest weeping angels from Doctor Who that I have seen. Reese and Karri, you guys did a great job on the costume!

I also sold my convention C-3PO, R2-D2, and Chewbacca to a young couple at the convention. They also commissioned me to do a Han Solo art piece. It's a good one! I'll post that one on Thursday. They gave me a Judge Dredd badge that they had picked up in the Freebie room. I'm a huge Dredd fan so I was super stoked! Candace, if are reading this, thank you so very much! I wish you and your hubby all the best in the world! If you make it to the Sci-fi Expo, stop by my booth and I'll give you a print of your choosing!

Megaman from Legends by Taylor Lymbery
I also had a commission for a Legends Megaman for a couple of awesome ladies who brought me some very delicious nachos! They kept Jeff and I and the awesome Artist Devin and his friend Brookes from Cheshire Cat Studios, entertained at the tables talking video games and  cartoons. Jeff and I made a lot of really good contacts with toy vendors, artists and fellow podcasters. We got to visit with the Awesome Taffeta Darling and Jeff was able to get a lot of really good toy memories from people who stopped by the table. By the time the final bell rang for us to close the booth and head home, I became a little sad. I had a blast interacting with everyone and being at the convention.

There's been an update to the store tabs on both Xenex the Bug Man, and this site. All of the print on demand issues, cafepress stores and commissions info will be under the new store tab on both this site and the Xenex the Bug Man site. Pin-up of the Day- Obi-Wan Kenobi!

Obi-Wan Kenobi art by Taylor Lymbery
Old Ben Kenobi is a great man! Yeah great at getting us in trouble. Grr! Yeah, you said, Chewie. Where did you dig up that old fossil?!

I'm surprised that I hadn't done an Obi-Wan Kenobi that reflected the Old Ben that I grew up with until now. He's a very iconic character. Across the spread of all of the  Star Wars movies, Ben Kenobi remains one of my favorite characters. I like how he is portrayed by both Sir Alec Guiness and Ewan McGregor. Though, I will have to say that I do enjoy the treatment of Kenobi a little less in the Attack of the Clones film. Still, I also feel that he is the redeeming quality for that film. Some of my favorite Star Wars toys are Obi-wan. I still have my Kenner action figure, Obi-Wan's Jedi Star Fighter from Attack of the Clones,  and Kenobi from Revenge of the Sith to pilot the ship. I just can't let go of these pieces. I will have to say, if Hasbro, I would like you to make an Ultimate FX lightsaber in the vane of Obi-Wan's A New Hope lightsaber. If you do, You've got a buyer. What do you say? You can also see this art piece here

BIG ALERT!!!

I'm apologize that the entry today is rather short. I'm getting ready to get setup for the convention tomorrow. Convention? Oh, I do have a table for the Fan Days Convention on October 19-21. I'll be there with a lot of new work to sell, including two new pin-up girl posters, a new issue of Xenex the Bug Man and custom toys. Jeff will also be selling some Marvindog media merchandise! There was one episode in the Voyager series where Neelix asked why Voyager had to go and inspect every anomaly it came across. Tricorder Theatre
I've read that the scene in Generations where Data is using his tricorder as a puppet, is thought to be one of the worst jokes in the Star Trek universe. When I saw this scene in the theater, I laughed so hard I had soda shoot through my nostrils! Needless to say, I still find it kind of funny. Don't judge... Go see this design on welovefine.com here!

Taylor's Toy Tuesday's DIY Custom- Superpony!

Superpony Toy by Taylor Lymbery

Superman! This pony is basically the horse version of Superman! I know it's silly, but I love this toy custom! I'm sure you have heard of Superman. I can't see why you wouldn't have seeing that he's a bit of a big character in the comic book world and pop culture world. So, I won't go into any background on this character. If you want to read up on his story, and see more about him, check out the Superman Homepage and Superman's wikipedia pageThese two sites should have all of the info you will need to  read all of the background of ole' Supe. Like the Spector Pony that I posted last week, this pony has only one point of articulation. His head turns. That's all he needs. His hairpiece and tail are specifically sculpted for this pony. He also features a soft goods cape. One of the things I love about the cape is that it looks like it is in a perma-flight mode. I've already tested his flight mode out by flying him around the house and making swooshing noises when he dives at the cats. They give two paws up for how awesome they think he is. I'll have this pony and any other ponies completed along with the other custom toys at the upcoming Fan Days Con  in Irving TX. If you are in the (NAY)-berhood, you should stop by and let me know what you think of the toys! Hopefully I'll see many of you there! Now, I've got some important updates, so more pictures will be at the end of this posting. Enjoy the pics. I've got to get back to illustrating comic books! :)

Pin-up of the Day- Wicket W. Warrick

Wicket Art by Taylor Lymbery
I know people who can not stand Ewoks. They just plain hate them. I'm not actually sure why. I believe some of the hatred comes from the fact that the Ewoks were originally supposed to be Wookies, but due to budgets issues, they decided to make Ewoks to save money on costumes. I believe that the rest of the dislike comes from the Ewoks cartoon, toy line, and made for TV movies. I've gone back and watched the Ewoks cartoon and movies and they are just plain terrible. They are not good. But, as far as Return of the Jedi, I'm actually ok with the Ewoks. They have a cute bear look about them, but if you take time to look at some of their costume pieces, you see bones and heads and spines. They are cute little  barbarian bear monsters and I'm cool with that display of clashing design! I don't know. I might be too much of an Ewok apologist. So here we have Wicket, or Wicket W. Warrick. Wicket was played by Warwick Davis. Wicket was one of the main Ewoks that you see the most in the Return of the Jedi film. He helps Leia and takes her to the Village, he also calls for reinforcements at the beginning of the ground battle for Endor. So he's very important for the plot of the movie. He's not my favorite Ewok. I hate to say it that way, but he's no Logray or Teebo. I think he needed a skull of his hat.  Kenner put an action figure of this character out in 1984. I never got one, but I am on the hunt. I can put him next to my Logray, the medicine Ewok. You can also see this art piece here

I just updated the Xenex the Bug Man website with rather grand news that the long awaited issue 4 is now up for order. It's a great looking comic book! Head on over to the Bug Man site and see what I'm talking about!

Now, you mighty be asking what this Marvin Dog media is. I've got answers. I had been working with a good friend of mine, Jeff McGee, before I got sick on designing logos and banners for a podcast that I am on and logos and banners of podcasts that other friends are on. I have listened to all of the shows so far and they are great! Jeff and I are on the show where we talk about toys! (Go figure, I mean Go action figure!) That show is called Talking toys with Taylor and Jeff. The other two shows are The pilot episode, where Jeff and Josh Taylor break down the Pilot Episode in TV series, and The Loosely Based Podcast where Brynna and Jeff compare the book to the movie adaptation! Again, the shows are great! If you are interested in what we got, go to Marvindogmedia.com  and give us a listen. You can subscribe to the shows on itunes and get up to date info on upcoming shows on facebook:
Talking Toys with Taylor and Jeff on facebook
The Loosely Based Podcast on facebook
The Pilot Episode on facebook

Give us a like! And, if you like what we have, be sure to tell your friends! We need your word of mouth to help us keep making shows!
