Hand Eye Study 1 by Taylor Lymbery

It's a sketchbook kind of day! Today I have hands, a couple of eyes and a mouth! Ooh! It's a bit creepy once you see the face in the middle. Hands are tough. I'm constantly using my own hands as models. Is that a problem? Not usually... not until I need to draw my right hand, and that's the hand that I use to draw with. There are hand models you can buy. I probably should get one, but what I am doing seems to be working fine for now. The trick to drawing hands is this: think of your hand as a flat rectangular box. Use an acute triangle for the base of your thumb. Then draw lines out for you fingers. Draw in spheres in the place of all of your joints in your hand. Then connect the spheres with little rectangular boxes that are the extensions of your fingers. With this basic model, you should be able to "pose" the hand and still be able to get the anatomy of it pretty close. It will take practice. The good thing about this method is that it gives you an easier idea of where shadows fall depending on the light source. Now, you don't have to use this method. This is how I learned to draw hands. Taylor's Toy Tuesday's DIY Custom- The Emperor's Royal Guard!

This is not the first time I have oohed and awed about the Emperor's Royal Guard. You really have to work hard to not like the simplistic and organic design of these guys.They have a nice predatory bird look designed in their helmet. They have are in al red and covered in awesomely designed robes. They have those scary soulless visors built into their helmets. Dude! What I'm trying to say is this, "These guys look really cool!" 

For this custom toy, I used a Roseart Color Blank body. I tried to keep the simple look of the Royal Guard uniform by not adding to much detail in how I made pieces. Here's an example: Instead of shaping a shoulder piece of the cowl to fit to the helmet, I dropped that feature and focused on the detail painting in the helmet. I extended the legs and painted the body to mimic the dark maroon of the Kenner Action figure. I then painted black lines in to be the stitching. I cut an under-skirt of red felt and stitched it in the back. To finish off the toy, I cut a red cape and glued it with foil for shaping and a dark red for the inside. I put it over the neck spoke and popped the head on. I then made a force pike and trimmed it to fit in the Guard's hand. I do have plans to make another Guard. I would like to pair them with an Emperor Custom. We shall see. Now, I've got some important updates, so more pictures will be at the end of this posting. Enjoy the pics. Pin-up of the Day- The Riddler!

 When Christopher Nolan original announced that the Dark Knight Rises was going to be a made film, I was swirling with excitement that we could get a great realistic Riddler. I would imagine how he would add a nice realistic twist on this amazing Batman Rogue's Gallery member. In the end, that ended up not being the case and instead we got a Catwoman, and Bane. But, it does make you wonder, "What would a Nolan Riddler be like?" At this point, I don't think any of us will ever know. The only closeness we could get to the idea of a Nolan "Real World" Riddler would be from The Batman the Animated Series. The animated series dealt with him in the way that the comics portrayed him; as being a cold calculating thug with a desire to confuse his victims with riddles. That is the Riddler I like! He would have more seriousness and less laughing and jumping around in skin tights. You can also see this piece here.

Action Figure Friday- MOTU Classics- Rattlor!

I had a bit of great satisfaction when I opened this newest version of King Hsss's Snake Man General, Rattlor. When I first saw Pixel Dan's review of this action figure, I knew that I wanted him in my collection. This action figure is fantastic! 
To start off, this toy, as with most all of the Masters of the Universe Classics action figures, is chocked full of articulation. You have a ball jointed neck; ball-hinged shoulders and hips; hinged elbows, knees, chest and ankles; and finally swivel waist and wrists. To add to this long list of movement, he also has a swivel tail much like that of Whiplash. So needless to say, this snake man is pretty poseable. One incredible thing about this toy has to be the paint application. It is truly beautiful. There is so much attention to detail that I would have to think that elements of Rattlor were in fact hand painted. The maroon is very vibrant and works so well with the yellows and blue, just like the original release of this character. 

Rattlor comes with his snake staff, an Evil Horde armband, and his neck extension. I like how they paid homage to the vintage and 200X toys with keeping the Strike like head. 

That's leaves the way you want to display your toy with a couple of options. I personally like having his neck extension on the toy. I really makes him tower a bit over all of the other Snake men that have been released so far. 

The tail has a rattle in it to harken back to the original release Rattlor that had a rattle in him. It makes sense; he's a rattle snake. The only problem I have with this rattle is that it is really quiet. Is that a big deal? Nope. Again, overall this action figure is great! Now I know that there have been some problems with some of the recent MOTU Classics toys having the paint rub off to show black plastic. I've seen a little paint peeling up from the ball joint of the neck extension. Other than that, I've had no problems. Now Mattel has said in passing that we might get the 200X armor for this action figure in a battle pack. I'm not too keen on getting the battle packs, but I might be tempted to get it just to get the armor. You can find this guy on amazon and ebay for about $40.00. Normally I would say just to wait to see if Mattycollector re-releases him, but if you want to drop the dollars for this guy I would understand. He's that cool.

Pin-Up of the Day- The Sorceress!

Oh, The Sorceress! Oh how you steal my heart! I'm a big fan of the Sorceress. After the 200X MYP cartoon of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, I have been in love. She's tough, wise and beautiful, just like my tough, wise and beautiful wife! Seriously! She is. I'm not kidding. The Sorceress is the protector of Castle Grayskull. She has a lot of back story throughout the various cartoon series, so I'm not going to go through all of it. I might touch on those biographies when I do large scale pieces of her in those various forms.  Here is her biography from the new Masters of the Universe Classics toy line:  

Growing up in a small Eternian village, Teela’na helped defend her people from a Horde Scout ship that had discovered her planet on a magic locating mission. Recognized for her loyalty, courage and wisdom, the current aging Sorceress® chose Teela’na to take up her title and defend Castle Grayskull’s secrets for the next generation. During her reign as Sorceress®, Teela’na not only cast the spell to clone the Sword of He, she was also cloned herself by Skeletor® who desired a magic-wielding bride to pass on his legacy. With the help of Man-At-Arms®, Teela’na saved the cloned child. If you are scratching your head, wondering what in the world I'm talking about, don't fret. Even as big of a fan as I consider myself, there are many story elements that I don't know. I will have to say this, I don't have a Sorceress action figure. I had a chance not to long ago to get the MOTU Classics line toy and I passed due to the way the action feature wings were made for her. They were just hideous. But, with chance for getting the very expensive MOTU Classics Castle Grayskull, I might have to reconsider and get a Classics Sorceress... You know, to protect my investment. You can also see this piece here.
