Sketch Card of the Day- Captain Cold!

For a while, I'll be posting some older art from my archives. I really should get that work on the site and it will help for postings as I finish up a big comic project for Gradient Comics. 

Today's Sketch card is Captain Cold. Captain Cold made his first appearance in May of 1957. He is a DC villain and namely one of the Flash's. I had never heard of Captain Cold until Mattel made an action figure of him in the DC Classics collection. He was part of a big build-a-figure toy wave and when I saw him, I couldn't resist getting him in my collection. This sketch card is based on that action figure.

I'm scheduled to be on the DELol show on Sunday July 21st to have a good old fashioned "Throw down in the toy isle" toy quiz compatition between Jeff and I. You need to tune in to the DELol show that Sunday. It will be fun!

Action Figure Friday- Hawkman (MOTU VS. DC)!

I hope everyone's Thanksgiving was splendid! To end this Hawkman week, I have...well,  Hawkman. Back in the beginning of this last Summer, I was in and out of the hospital due to illness. When I got in from the hospital I was met by one of my best friends, Jeff from the Talking Toys with Taylor and Jeff podcast. He had a wonderful gift of The Masters of the Universe vs. DC Classics -Hawkman vs, Stratos 2 pack. I will have to say, this has to be the best MOTU vs. DC 2 pack on the market today! This version of Hawkman is just like the DC classics Hawkman minus the sword and shield. Here is a listing of that Hawkman on Cool Toy Review. I didn't have a Hawkman action figure from the DC classics line so I didn't feel like I was doubling up on the same toy. The Stratos from that 2 pack is also equally awesome! But, I will feature that one on another day.

Taylor's Toy Tuesday's DIY Custom- Hawkpony!

I will have to start off by saying that I did not think this custom pony would actually get finished. I had a lot of problems with this guy. In the end, he turned out great, but the road to the end was paved with a lot of redo. Some of the major problems that I faced was with paint coloring on the pants and the wings. For the pants, I used a gloss green for the legs and decided to then paint the red tights and boots onto the green. That was a bad idea. I ended up using several coats to get the red to not show any green from underneath. I definitely know now to not paint that red over that gloss green. Honestly, I should have known. The second problem was with the wings. I originally was just going to do wings that were folded up. After talking to a couple of people, I was convinced to do open wings that match the helmet. I got one open wing sculpted and baked. I then sculpted the second one, baked it and then saw that it did not match the first wing at all. So I sculpted another. Once the wings were done and painted, I then found that the wings didn't actually flush fit to the body anymore. I ended up using glue gun filler to fit the wings. It worked. Again, I honestly didn't think this pony would actually make it to posting, but it did. I would like to say that stubborn perseverance from me is what made this pony come to pass. Never give up! Never Surrender! Now, I've got some important updates, so more pictures will be at the end of this posting. Enjoy the pics. I've got to get back to illustrating comic books! :)

Sketch Card of the day- Hawkman!

This week will be a Hawkman kind of week. To start off this week, I have an older sketch card of the winged hero. Hawkman is a DC superhero who was created by Gardener Fox (writer) and Dennis Neville (artist). Several incarnations of Hawkman have appeared in DC Comics, all of them characterized by the use of archaic weaponry and by large, artificial wings, attached to a harness made from the special Nth metal that allows flight. Most incarnations of Hawkman work closely with a partner/romantic interest named Hawkgirl or Hawkwoman. When I was a kid, my best friend Stephan gave me his Super Powers Hawkman action figure. My Hawkman didn't have wings, but that did not keep me from flying him around. But anything about this character outside of me having an action figure of Hawkman was completely unknown to me as a kid. In all honestly, I should read more comics with Hawkman in them. There is one story I am looking forward to getting my hands on where Hawkman and Adam Strange, one of my favorite characters, team up to end a war between the Rann's and Thanagar's inhabitants. I've heard that it is just ok, but it has such a heavy hand of science fiction that I can't pass it up. I hope it doesn't disappoint. You can also see this sketch card here in my devianart gallery.

Pin-up of the Day- The Riddler!

 When Christopher Nolan original announced that the Dark Knight Rises was going to be a made film, I was swirling with excitement that we could get a great realistic Riddler. I would imagine how he would add a nice realistic twist on this amazing Batman Rogue's Gallery member. In the end, that ended up not being the case and instead we got a Catwoman, and Bane. But, it does make you wonder, "What would a Nolan Riddler be like?" At this point, I don't think any of us will ever know. The only closeness we could get to the idea of a Nolan "Real World" Riddler would be from The Batman the Animated Series. The animated series dealt with him in the way that the comics portrayed him; as being a cold calculating thug with a desire to confuse his victims with riddles. That is the Riddler I like! He would have more seriousness and less laughing and jumping around in skin tights. You can also see this piece here.

Taylor's Toy Tuesday's DIY Custom- The Flash Pony!!

My first real introduction to The Flash was through static on my television screen back in 1990. I would struggle to get the show to come through the rabbit ears to see the excitement of John Wesley Shipp playing Barry Allen, the fastest man alive! The show is very silly at times, but It was always worth sitting through the snow. I've always liked the look of The Flash's costume and like the idea of the Flash's super powers. I have read only a handful of stories that both Barry Allen (Flash I) and Wally West (Flash II) have appeared in. The last story was the Blackest Night series. Before that, it was JLA. Neither one are probably great examples of who The Flash is in his world. Honestly, I really should find some decent stories that feature him. So, needless to say, my knowledge of The Flash is really based on the T.V. series. 

When I was making this pony, I had a debate with myself about whether this pony should have a tail or not. I like the idea of Flash pony wanting to streamline his costume in order to be that much faster, but he is a pony, and I couldn't have him without his tail. In the end, I made a compromise. The Flash Pony would tie up his tail into a bob. That way, the tail would not cause drag by loosely hanging behind him. When I did this, I wasn't sure if anyone would get the idea without me having to give background. At the last convention, I found a couple of people who got it without any explanation. I like them. They get me. Now, I've got some important updates, so more pictures will be at the end of this posting. Enjoy the pics. I've got to get back to illustrating comic books! :)

Pin-Up of the Day- Lex Luthor in Power Armor!

As I was going through some of my older work, I came across this gem. Many of my friends feel that the Power Armor version of Lex Luthor is just plain ridiculous. They have their reasons. In some ways, I will have to agree with them on some areas of silliness with his armor, but over all, I kind of like his power armor. If you are familiar with Superman, there is a good chance you know of Lex Luthor. He's the villainous brains to Superman's heroic brawn. In the 80's, Lex got a suit of amor that made him virtually invincible in the brawn department. I've heard the arguments on why Lex doesn't need the suit. He out thinks his opponents. After all he is the poster child of evil geniuses for the DC roster. But, the simple fact remains that he is not powerful in body and every once in a while, he just wants to be able to dominate by fist. This suit allows him to do just that! Think about it. If I had a suit that would allow me to punch through a brick wall, I'd wear it everyday. Seriously. The first time I saw this suit was in action figure form. It was Kenner's Super Power's Collection Power Armor Lex Luthor that got me hooked to this bright green armored awesomeness. I never got this toy, though I would always be on the lookout for him as a kid. I did get a power armor Lex Luthor years later with the DC vs Masters of the Universe Classics Skeletor vs. Lex Luthior 2 pack. I even wrote a review about it. I was happy to have this version of Lex after all of these years. It's a good action figure. Now, I said that there was some silliness with his armor. Here it is. My only complaint about his armor is this, I really, nay, REALLY believe that he should have a face mask or something to protect his noggin. What good is being a super genius in an invincible robot suit, if your super brain is unprotected from attack? Think about it. You can also see this piece here.

Pin-up of the Day- The Joker!

It's a day after Halloween and I don't have scary out of my system, yet. So I am taking a step back from some new work and I'm bringing in some older pieces I've done. This one happens to be kind of scary! This is my take on the Joker. I did this piece about a year and so ago. My friend and old manager, Domenick used to say that I looked like the Joker, so I used my face as a base for the insane Clown Prince of Gotham. I had break time and an extra board in my possession so I went for it. I honestly was not sure if this piece was going to turn out when I started it, but I believe that it worked out in the end. I did notice way after the fact that the nose and right side cheek are a little off. At this point there is not a lot I can do to fix it. But this piece is no loss! I do look upon this as an art lesson and I still got a rather scary take on the Joker in my gallery. Score! Next time, I think I'll go with a more comic book version of Joker, but still keep him frightening. Oh, and I'll get that nose and cheek right. You can also see this art piece here.

Taylor's Toy Tuesday's DIY Custom- Superpony!

Superman! This pony is basically the horse version of Superman! I know it's silly, but I love this toy custom! I'm sure you have heard of Superman. I can't see why you wouldn't have seeing that he's a bit of a big character in the comic book world and pop culture world. So, I won't go into any background on this character. If you want to read up on his story, and see more about him, check out the Superman Homepage and Superman's wikipedia page. These two sites should have all of the info you will need to  read all of the background of ole' Supe. Like the Spector Pony that I posted last week, this pony has only one point of articulation. His head turns. That's all he needs. His hairpiece and tail are specifically sculpted for this pony. He also features a soft goods cape. One of the things I love about the cape is that it looks like it is in a perma-flight mode. I've already tested his flight mode out by flying him around the house and making swooshing noises when he dives at the cats. They give two paws up for how awesome they think he is. I'll have this pony and any other ponies completed along with the other custom toys at the upcoming Fan Days Con  in Irving TX. If you are in the (NAY)-berhood, you should stop by and let me know what you think of the toys! Tricorder Theatre

I've read that the scene in Generations where Data is using his tricorder as a puppet, is thought to be one of the worst jokes in the Star Trek universe. When I saw this scene in the theater, I laughed so hard I had soda shoot through my nostrils! Needless to say, I still find it kind of funny. Just a quick update: I did go ahead and purchase a table for the Fan Days Convention in October. I'll be there with a ton of new work to sell, a new issue of Xenex the Bug Man and new posters. So I'll see you there!

There's been an update to the store tabs on both Xenex the Bug Man, and this site. Now, you mighty be asking what this Marvin Dog media is. I've got answers. I had been working with a good friend of mine, Jeff McGee, before I got sick on designing logos and banners for a podcast that I am on and logos and banners of podcasts that other friends are on. I have listened to all of the shows so far and they are great! Jeff and I are on the show where we talk about toys! (Go figure, I mean Go action figure!) That show is called Talking toys with Taylor and Jeff. The other two shows are The pilot episode, where Jeff and Josh Taylor break down the Pilot Episode in TV series, and The Loosely Based Podcast where Brynna and Jeff compare the book to the movie adaptation!
