Sketch Card of the day- Faker!

Our sketch card of the day is Faker! For those that don't know, Faker is supposed to be identical to He-Man. He's an evil robot of Skeletor's that is supposed to fool the good people of Eternia, making them think that He-Man had turned to evil. In the old filmation cartoon, Faker is truly identical to He-man with the exception of his eyes. The only way one could tell the two apart was that Faker's eyes glowed. In a 200X cartoon episode, faker is a palace sparring droid that is programmed with a holographic camoflag to look like He-man to help him out when Adam is captured. In this episode you get a quick glimpse of him turning blue before he is shut down. Now, the toys are a different story! There have been 4 toy versions of Faker; one was a vintage action figure, one was a 200X exclusive action figure, and two Classics action figures. All of these toys carry the same color scheme, blue body with orange armor and purple loin cloths and boots. I'm not sure when the last time was that the good people of Eternia looked upon He-man to realize that he's not blue, but if they were, they need to get their eyes checked cause they might be blind. To make matters worse, he's wearing a mock up of Skeletor's body armor! Let's just say that If I had this action figure when I was a kid, the Heroic masters would not have been fooled! As a kid, I never thought much of Faker. I basically passed him up every time I saw him. Now that I'm older, I do have a better appreciation of him. For some reason, the blue on orange on purple color scheme really catches the eye, and maybe that's exactly what Mattel was going for. I wouldn't mind having a full run of action figures of this character. If I had to choose one of the action figures, it would be the 2011 exclusive of DC Universe Classics vs. Masters of the Universe Classics, Bizzaro vs. Faker. This version of Faker has him wearing Skeletor's Battle Armor in Orange! In my opinion, it's the best action figure version of this character. You can also see this art piece here.

I just updated the Xenex the Bug Man website with rather grand news that the long awaited issue 4 is now up for order. It's a great looking comic book! Head on over to the Bug Man site and see what I'm talking about!

Pin-Up of the Day- Bethany the Vulture Girl

I decided to add another Bird inspired pin-up girl to the roster of my alternative pin-up girls! Ever since I did the "Rachel the Owl Girl" piece, I have felt inspired to get another bird based girl done while on break from illustrating comic book pages. I do have plans to get a hawk based or eagle based bird girl done one day, but for now, I have Bethany. 

I am pretty happy with this one. I love that there is a lot of color. Originally, I saw this being a rather color muted piece. I imagined that there would be a  lot of browns, tans, and gray. I wasn't sure I could let that happen, so I used the outfit to splash in color and did this nice backdrop that reminds me of the type of backdrop you get in a photography studio; also known as a paper role. 

In some ways, the body seems a little off. I really like this. I feel that it helps define my overall style. I tend to make the neck long. This is a feature I like to accentuate. I think it comes from my wife having a long neck. I find that body feature very beautiful! 

I managed to do all the pencils and ink in one sitting. I colored it the following day in photoshop. I have added this to my run of alternative pin-up girl posters that I'll have available at conventions. You can also see this art piece here.

Birthday Art Pieces! - Bioshock and Batman

Big Daddy Helm by Taylor Lymbery

I have had a couple of friends birthday's roll around this past week. One of my friends, I normally just get a gift card to get video game stuff. I felt that this year should have a bit of a change. I kept with the video game theme (and gift card) and gave him an art piece I made from one of his favorite video games, Bioshock. I've had some suggestions for future pieces in the realm of how I did this one. One is to feature each suit piece that the main game character has to find in order to become Big Daddy. I am really considering that one. The other idea is to feature each helmet from the series. I'm really considering that one due to the fact that I really like the Big Sister helmet. The other idea I have is to portray some of the recognizable costume pieces from various video games that my friend likes. I am considering that possibility as well. If you have a suggestion, feel free to comment.

Damian Batman by Taylor Lymbery

Now the second piece that I made was for a friend who is a big Batman fan. More so, he's a fan of Batman's son, Damian. In the graphic novel of Batman and Son, there is a story in the end that is of Damian in the future. He took over the role of Batman to carry the legacy on. His Batman is pretty rough. So, to have that fun Batman piece, but it not necessarily be Bruce, I decided to pick his favorite series character Robin and put him in his future Batman role. I'm not sure if I'd do any more in this series. That particular story arc ran for one issue. I could do the evil batman. I might consider it as a gift for another birthday or Christmas. I'm not sure yet. This is the second piece that I have given my friend as a gift. The other gift was a bit of a request. It was Charles Darwin fighting an Ape. I need to remind myself to ask him what his favorite piece is. He loves the theme of Darwin fighting an ape. He has another artist's version of that on his fridge.

I try my hand at some Star Trek T-Shirts

When I found that the t-shirt site, welovefine.com, was doing a design contest on Star Trek, I felt that I had to jump to and get some designs done: I love Star Trek! There was no way I would not have grown up with Star Trek, having one parent that is a trekkie and the other that is a general sci-fi enthusiast. Even though, I'm not as big of a fan of the original series (TOS) as I am of the Next Generation (TNG), and recently I have found that my favorite series so far is Voyager(STV), I must admit that I love ALL of the Star Trek universe! Tricorder Theatre

I've read that the scene in Generations where Data is using his tricorder as a puppet, is thought to be one of the worst jokes in the Star Trek universe. When I saw this scene in the theater, I laughed so hard I had soda shoot through my nostrils! Needless to say, I still find it kind of funny. Don't judge...
