Sketch Card of the Day- Sssqueeze!

Today's deviation is Sssqueeze!  Man oh man, did I want this action figure when I was a kid! This character was all arms, and when I say all arms I mean that he had 12 inches of arms for a 5 inch toy. The idea with this guy was that he had snake arms that were like a boa constrictor. He would (yep you got it) sssqueeze his victims! The vinatage figurine had more of a Tyrannosaurus Rex head, which seemed a little off to me. When the 200X cartoon came around, I was excited to see how Sssqueeze was remade into a true snake man. I was hoping that fans would get a cool action figure of him for the toy line. No such luck, but like Rio Blast and a few other redesigned characters from the 200X series, we did get a Statue from the company NECA. This sketch card design is based on that 200X design. I really love this design, but my one complaint with him was that his redesign had snake faces on his hands. The vintage didn't have face hands. Instead he had regular snake hands. Oh wait! I can't believe I just said regular snake hands. I know snakes don't have hands, and I know He-Man is a fantasy, but come on! Funny thing to think about is every time this guy claps his hands, he's actually skull bashing himself! Maybe Mattel will offer interchangeable hands with and without faces for the Masters of the Universe Classics action figure! You can also see this sketch card here.

Just a quick update: I did go ahead and purchase a table for the Fan Days Convention in October. So I will be there (given that I don't have another mishap).

Sketch Card of the Day- Flogg!

Flogg Sketch Card by Taylor Lymbery

Today's deviation is Flogg! Flogg, or Brakk, is the leader of the Space Mutants in the New Adventures of He-Man series. Working with Skeletor to take the heroic planet of Primus, Flogg uses his dim wits and whip to, well, try over and over again to take Primus. I remember seeing a Flogg action figure when I was young. He's pretty cool. I always wanted one, but never really got around to adding him to my collection. I'm not exactly sure why. He had this cool action feature of whip slapping power that made me wish it had been added to Beast Man years before! (It was a bit of waist twist paired with the arm drop.) I did think of Flogg as a pretty cruel hearted and brilliant leader, but the cartoon had different ideas with the evil space mutants that I had given a more serious characterization in my mind. When I finally saw the cartoon years later, I was a little disappointed in how Flogg was portrayed. Sometimes a bit silly is too much. C'est la vie. Sketch Card of Day- The Mighty Spector!

The Mighty Spector by Taylor Lymbery

Today's deviation is The Mighty Spector! I think that this has to be one of the most controversial characters to come out as f here recent. For Mattel's Masters of the Universe 30th anniversary, they are making characters from past contest and, fan designs, sculptor designs, comic book writers designs, and Scott "Toy Guru" Neitlich, which is The Mighty Spector. I just want to get my own personal feelings out of the way before I continue any further. I really don't like the design, but I think he's an ok character having read the bio. For me, this character stands out like a sore thumb. A lot of MOTU fans complained about his mask mimicking Dead Pool from Marvel Comics. That doesn't bother me too much. What bothers me is the Spade on his armor. I just don't get it. Is he an ace in the hole? Does he play poker? Is it a military thing? I just don't get it. Other than that, he's ok in my opinion. It does make me wonder what all the fans are hating about, though. I wonder if it has anything to do with this being Scott Neitlich's design... You can also see this sketch card here.

Sketch Card of the Day- Rio Blast!

Rio Blast Sketch Card by Taylor Lymbery

Today's deviation is Rio Blast! I just want to start off by stating how out of place I feel this character is in the MOTU universe! I love this character, but the cyborg gun toting limbs space cowboy doesn't really fit. Secondly, his name screams something of a extremely Cool-Aid flavor, strange love making act or a water slide park from the early 90's! (Tubular) But yet, here we have a cyborg with hidden blaster toting appendages in space marshall digs with an incredibly simple yet flamboyant name. As a kid, I remember searching for Rio Blast. I knew he didn't fit, but he was so unique that I just had to have him in my collection! I would imagine what he could do to help He-Man and the Masters with all of the gun power that he was toting. And then I would think of scenarios where Skeletor would offer him a job playing in on his space cowboy loneliness personality to turn him from the Masters. In the end, his loyal heart of gold would bring him back to the good and he would blast evil with the super awesome giant blaster backpack and thigh and chest cannons! I imagined a lot, but was never able to get him. To this day, I am still trying to get a Rio Blast that will not cut too deep into my toy budget. Years later, I essentially got my "Rio Blast" when I got Marshall Bravestarr, but it just wasn't the same. When the 200X series was being made, I had really hoped that Rio would be made in action figure form. We weren't so lucky. He did however get made in the MYP vain as a staction or statue figurine. I am also after this one... at a decent price. So far, no luck. So, with the classics series running, I'm going to have to breakdown and get Mr. Blast. Let's hope he worth the price tag by the time he comes out! You can also see this sketch card here.

Sketch Card of the day- Whiplash!

Today's deviation is Whiplash! Growing up, I never really appreciated Whiplash like I do today. All in all, I remember feeling that his look on the vintage action figure was kinda, well... goofy. It was his teeth. The one thing that I did enjoy about this figure was the spring waste tail smashing action feature! He could clear a row of annoying Cobra soldiers firing at him! (cross brand play scenerio where Cobra Commander taps into a wormhole leading to snake mountain (good stuff!)) But overall, I did not really love this character. When the MYP or 200X series of action figures came to be, I had to change my mind. The Four Horsemen (Toy Sculptors) did a fantastic job redesigning this character! Easily, he is one of my favorite character designs in the MYP collection! The sculpt that they did is just beautiful! If you have not seen the design, go and look it up now! Now, Mattel has put out a Whiplash in the Classics line. The design goes back to more of the classic vintage look, hence the "Classics" in the title of, "Masters of the Universe Classics". I don't have this version, but I do want to get him. At first, I was adamant about getting him due to the fact that a load of fans said that his 200X head just looked ridiculous on the vintage styled body. After seeing more pics of the 200X head on the Classics body, I kind of don't agree. Yes the Classics 200X head is bigger than 200X head is in comparison to their bodies, but I'm ok with that. Oh, and the Classics version also has the vintage head with it, and I still think it looks absolutely ridiculous! It's the teeth. You can also see this sketch card here.
